The Law of Appreciation

Today, I got a letter via WhatsApp. The way I grinned, one would have taught it was more than a letter. To me, it’s actually more than a letter. Here’s why.
I met this estate agent a while ago. Young, dynamic and versatile, he made a good impression on me from the moment I saw him. I referred his services to someone I know who needed to buy a property.
He swung into action and the deal was consummated a short while ago. What he did today was to send me a personal note thanking me for the referral.
And here’s where many sales people miss the point. The moment they make a sale, they move on to the next prospect. Most do not take a moment to appreciate those who helped them make that sale.
Unfortunately, they miss a golden opportunity because a person who feels appreciated will always do more than is expected.
I recall the story of the 10 lepers in the Bible who were healed. Only one came to extend some appreciation to the Master Healer, Jesus Christ. The statement the Lord made shows that even the Son of the Most High recognizes a heart of gratitude when he sees one.
“Were there not ten men cleansed? But where are the nine?” The greatest way to reach any human being is to connect with their emotions and a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
A sales man or anyone for that matter who appreciates a previous sale or a referral will be outstanding simply because most people never care to say thank you. The secret to getting more sales may not necessarily be in looking for more prospects.
You may be able to unlock more sales simply by looking back to those who helped you and sending a note of appreciation to them. Buy them a small gift. Call them to say thank you.
I tell my daughter that when someone shows you a favour, you thank the person more than once. Once is never enough is my policy. According to Robert Louis Stevenson, “Keep your eyes open to your mercies. The man who forgets to be thankful has fallen asleep in life”.
The norm is that many people won’t remember you until they need something from you. I consider this a sense of entitlement and what separates entitlement from privilege is gratitude, according to Brene Brown.
Business people should cultivate this habit of showing appreciation. Don’t wait until Christmas when everyone is sending cards or a token to do yours. The waiting period would have diluted the strength of your appreciation.

I appreciate the thoughtfulness of Mr Emmanuel Akingbola of Hanuel Homes @hanuelhomes. I am neither expecting a single dime from him nor will I take anything. I am just impressed with his sound business practices and most especially the letter of appreciation I received today.

“Daddy, Why Did You Come Late?”

Around this period 36 years ago, my father drove me to Federal Government College, Idoani to resume my secondary education. Today, I had the privilege of doing the same to my daughter.
Last week, I had taken her to school for a 2-day orientation programme. Today, she resumed formally at the Big School.

I had shown her how to knot a tie last week and I repeated the same this morning as we got ready for school.
Last night, we spent time praying in her room as we thanked God for granting us this grace. I am so glad to be alive to witness this. One would think I was the one resuming school with the enthusiasm I woke her this morning to get ready.

On this brain drain...

Early this year, I had a colonoscopy at a hospital in VI. When I was getting ready, the doctor had a conversation with me. Absolutely brilliant, he explained the process to me. I got into my hospital gown, made a few calls and the procedure was done.
A few days later, the hospital called me that the result was ready and I was expecting a date when I'll come in to discuss the results with my doctor. I was informed that the doctor would take me through the results via a video call. I gave my consent.
A short while later, I got a WhatsApp Video call from a UK number. I picked it. It was the doctor in his scrubs. He was seated in a hospital in the United Kingdom. He went through my results with me.

Sometimes, Just Being Human Is The Highest Form of Leadership

We were all gathered for a business review session that morning. We had the Executive Director who supervised us visiting from Lagos. Suddenly, as he looked round, he asked for one of my colleagues.
The guy was absent. It turned out he lost his dad that morning and couldn't come to work.
We concluded the meeting and this Director had to go on calls before going back to Lagos. On the way to one of the calls, he asked to be taken to the house of the colleague who lost his father.

Leadership: The Greatest Investment Is In People

Some years ago when I was a Branch Manager, I sat at one of our monthly performance review meetings and it suddenly dawned on me that seated right there in that room were four other Branch Managers who had passed through me.
In other words, they were Relationship Officers whom I supervised but had now become Branch Managers. I felt so much joy that day.
The greatest job of a leader is to produce other leaders. There is no greater satisfaction than replicating yourself. Leaders should produce leaders and not just followers. We must consciously work on developing leadership capacity in the team or people we lead.

The 4 Competencies of Nigeria’s President

Yesterday, I co-anchored Impact 2021 with TVC’s Esther Omopariola. This is the third year in a row that both of us have anchored this event starting with Impact 2019 which featured Desmond Elliot, Dayo Israel and Prof Kingsley Moghalu.
In 2020, it was the turn of Prof Chukwuma Soludo. And yesterday, it was the turn of Pastor Ituah Ighodalo and Prof Kingsley Moghalu. The Impact Conference is organized by the Liberty Parish of RCCG led by my good friend and brother, Pastor Adebayo Oseni.
Pastor Oseni is passionate about bringing the much desired change to Nigeria. This informed the theme for this year’s conference - Which Way Nigeria? Listening to the theme song, Which Way Nigeria by late Sonny Okosun, it was difficult to believe he produced that song in 1985.

Lessons Linda Ikeji Taught Me

My attitude whenever I come across a new person or an issue is to open up myself to learn. Even the Holy Writ encourages that and one of my favourite scriptures is the one encouraging sluggards to learn from the ant.
When Linda called my phone that she had arrived our premises, I went outside to chaperone her. She drove herself. I observed as she took directives from the security guards who instructed how she should park. She’s a very good driver.
She came down from her vehicle and greeted like we had known for ages. No airs around her. We engaged in chit chat until I walked her into the place where my MD was hosting her along with other female executives of our organization.
