Leadership: The Greatest Investment Is In People

Some years ago when I was a Branch Manager, I sat at one of our monthly performance review meetings and it suddenly dawned on me that seated right there in that room were four other Branch Managers who had passed through me.
In other words, they were Relationship Officers whom I supervised but had now become Branch Managers. I felt so much joy that day.
The greatest job of a leader is to produce other leaders. There is no greater satisfaction than replicating yourself. Leaders should produce leaders and not just followers. We must consciously work on developing leadership capacity in the team or people we lead.
This is my life focus now- raising others.

How can we do this?
1. Invest in people.

I spend time mentoring and coaching. Give personal attention to people in your team. Let them see how you do certain things and explain how to do it also. Don't just relish in being a local champion.
When you invest in others, you increase your ability to go global- through the people you have raised. You multiply the scope of your influence that way. You help yourself by helping others.
2. Delegate

Many leaders are afraid to delegate. Delegation is one thing we need to do more. Give your team mates more responsibility. Let them handle more assignments. Sometimes, you need to sit back and let them do the job.
Yes, they will fail in a few but how can they learn if they don't handle those tasks? Your job is to inspect what you expect. Give them clear guidelines and watch from a distance. Allow them to make their mistakes. Correct them. Rinse and repeat. That's how they will grow.
3. Let your people know you believe in them.

One of the greatest things a leader can do is to be a cheerleader. When your people know you believe in them, you not only give them wings to fly, they will also do anything for you. Offer them words of encouragement.
Be enthusiastic about their progress. Amplify their strengths. Whatever you amplify will be exemplified.
4. Give them credit

Be very generous with praise. Give them credit as much as possible. Don't take all the glory or credit for the accomplishment of your team. Let people understand their contribution to your success as the leader.
Praise is a confidence booster. It pushes them to do more.

We need more leaders.

The 4 Competencies of Nigeria’s President

Yesterday, I co-anchored Impact 2021 with TVC’s Esther Omopariola. This is the third year in a row that both of us have anchored this event starting with Impact 2019 which featured Desmond Elliot, Dayo Israel and Prof Kingsley Moghalu.
In 2020, it was the turn of Prof Chukwuma Soludo. And yesterday, it was the turn of Pastor Ituah Ighodalo and Prof Kingsley Moghalu. The Impact Conference is organized by the Liberty Parish of RCCG led by my good friend and brother, Pastor Adebayo Oseni.
Pastor Oseni is passionate about bringing the much desired change to Nigeria. This informed the theme for this year’s conference - Which Way Nigeria? Listening to the theme song, Which Way Nigeria by late Sonny Okosun, it was difficult to believe he produced that song in 1985.

Lessons Linda Ikeji Taught Me

My attitude whenever I come across a new person or an issue is to open up myself to learn. Even the Holy Writ encourages that and one of my favourite scriptures is the one encouraging sluggards to learn from the ant.
When Linda called my phone that she had arrived our premises, I went outside to chaperone her. She drove herself. I observed as she took directives from the security guards who instructed how she should park. She’s a very good driver.
She came down from her vehicle and greeted like we had known for ages. No airs around her. We engaged in chit chat until I walked her into the place where my MD was hosting her along with other female executives of our organization.

The Leadership Template of Jesus

On my way to work today, I reflected on how Jesus chose his 12 disciples. Knowing fully well He had an uncommon assignment which also depended to a very large extent on the team he chose, I believe so much went into choosing that first team.
He had to carefully lay the foundation because this was an assignment that would 'outlive' Him. It was a generational assignment- an eternal one.
Andrew.

First person to 'discover' Jesus. Was an initial follower of John the Baptist. Decamped to follow Jesus. Very good man who was willing to share with others. Could convince others because he had the gift of persuasion.

Ayinla Omowura- The Movie

When I saw the creatives on the wall of Folorunso Fatai Adisa , I knew it was a movie I had to watch. I bought the book written on Ayinla Omowura by Festus Adedayo earlier but I've not yet read it so the release of the movie heightened my curiosity.
The music of Ayinla Omowura was part of my childhood. Radio O-Y-O (now known as BCOS) played his music along with other Yoruba legends such as Haruna Ishola, Yusuf Olátúnjí, Dauda Epo Akara, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Batile Alake, Salawa Abeni, Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade,
Shina Adéwálé, Delẹ Abiodun, Emperor Pick Peters, Sir Dele Ojo and Ayinla Kollington among others. I know so many elderly folks who relish Omowura's music particularly.

"NOW, WE EVEN TAKE PLAYERS FROM KINDERGARTEN"

He was only 17 years when he was asked to join the Inter's
senior team.
His older team mate Leopoldo Conti who felt
slighted that he was being 'benched' by a player he
considered too young to join the team, exclaimed, ' Now, we
even take players from kindergarten'.
It was Giuseppe Meazza's debut and he scored two goals during that match.

Meazza reminds one of David who took on a big challenge of
facing Goliath at that same age. His older brothers
considered him ill-experienced for the task because of his
age.

Lessons My Father Taught Me

A few days ago, I stopped by at my father's office to check on him and also give him a copy of my new book 40 Lessons I Learnt Along The Way. I also gave him the audio-book copy for him to play in his car.
I had to wait for him a bit as he was out of office. That period gave me the opportunity to reflect on my relationship with my father. When I gave him a copy of my book, I saw the joy that radiated from his face.
He looked at the book and prayed for me. As I said amen to his prayers, several thoughts passed through my mind.
