COVID-19 physician Webinar incl Dr Gustafson: "see a degree of decoupling of infection from hospitalization" "we're in a transition phase"
"need to stop counting cases like we've been counting in the last 18 mths... need to focus on hospitalizations & deaths" #Covid19BC
Dr Gustafson on mental health: Children have been struggling. Young adults affected disproportionately.
now on vaccine trials in children
Q&A time, over 100 questions asked. (I'm recording the audio, hopefully video will be archived)
"We're not Yet recommending vaccine + Natural Infection to achieve (population) immunity, it's too risky right now, perhaps sometime in the future." - Mark Lysyshyn, Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
Q: When will Covid be over?
Dr G: Covid is not going away but will become endemic that circulate like other resp viruses. We're in transition phase. 2 things need to happen: 1. Continue immunization 2. Shift on perception: we have focused on covid-19 for so long. #Covid19BC
Dr G: we need to shift our perception. We need to focus on preventing serious illness and death. We still have pandemic among those unimmunized.
Need to have calm and confident leadership...
Dr G: .. school and post secondary education carry very little risk.
Return to normal societal function is health, economic and societal priority.
Q: N95 mask in office settings for Delta?
Dr G: you do Not need N95 respirator because delta is more infectious. The mode and setting of Covid transmission has not changed..
Dr G: Covid-19 is transmitted most commonly at home.
Prevention measures remain the same.
Primary prevention is via vaccine, and staying home when sick.
If necessary surgical mask in healthcare setting.
Q: Opinion re: Aerosol spread of Covid19.
A: (Mel Krajden, Medical Director of the Public Health Laboratory, BCCDC): "I always struggle with aerosol vs droplets. if you wear ppe and don't rub eyes, you're protected. We tend to focus on the peripheral aerosol and droplets, while
..while many of the time it's when you drop your guards eg touching noses and face.
there's no way to answer that
Q: What's understanding of long covid?
A(Mark Lysyshyn): the vaccine does protect / reduce long Covid
A(Mel Krajden): we don't have good case control data on what proportion dev long covid.
many other resp illness (eg mycoplasma) cause chronic disease. we need better studies.
Q: Why is BCCDC not taking into account of @bcCOVID19group modelling which correctly predicted P1 and Delta surges?
A: we did consider these models in the context of our own models.
Criticism of models: it's just about Covid, it doesn't model other outcomes.
Reason to restart: 1. In context of immunization. 2. Restrictions causing significant harm.
- Covid is #6 (?) cause of death.
- overdoses high cause of death among some age grp
- visits for mental health increased.
- increase in adults Rx antidepressant/anxiolytics
'we are trying not to look at covid19 in isolation'
Manish Sadarangani: Restrictions also come with morbidity and mortality ('huge mental health toll in children and adolescents')
