I went food shopping tonight, and as I entered the supermarket and I put on my mask I felt this cold wet thing touch my hand. It was a dog, attached to a leash held by a woman who was asking people to help her shop. She is blind, and 75 years old
I really wanted to say no. In my mind I said no, but I helped her. In fact her dog nuzzled my hand and decided to sit down next to me as a way to ask my help for her owner.
I told her I would be glad to help her, as long as she let me hug her dog. So, we struck a deal
She had a pretty large list of items. And some of what she wanted was really specific. So, I let her know the price and the ingredients and the brand and the expiration dates.
If I would have said no to helping her my daughter would be really upset
She didn’t want me to drive her home, and I was pretty insistent that I do that as it was past midnight. She didn’t want to impose on me. So I took her phone, ordered a Lyft and when I said hello to the driver my Spidey sense went nuts and I said no to that guy.
Her phone kept on ringing and I asked her if I could answer it. It was her daughter who was frantic. She didn’t want to impose on her daughter because her daughter does so much. They apparently have a very lovely relationship.
I told her daughter what I did, and that we were at this grocery store, and I would gladly wait with her mom until her daughter came to pick her up. Her daughter came, she matched the photos in her mom’s phone, the woman recognized her and the dog was super happy to see her
Both mom and her daughter tried to pay me for helping her. I’m not going to accept money to help a blind woman shop. That seems all kinds of fucked up. It didn’t cost me anything but time. Plus, I got to love on a dog. That was payment enough.
They were insistent they pay me. I asked them if they would be willing to do a compromise: take the $20 that you were about to give me, go to a pet store and let the dog pick out a toy, and then send me a text message with a picture of the dog and her new toy. “Deal”
