On the day we passed #LessisMoreNY, Jose Mejia Martinez, a 34yo jailed on a parole violation, died on Rikers

Now, 3 mo later, @GovKathyHochul signs the bill with an expected implementation of March '22

How many more will die while we wait?

Implement Less is More immediately 🧵
Jose was the 3rd man jailed on a minor parole violation to die on Rikers in 2 months

Another, Thomas Braunson III, was 35 when he died on Rikers on April 19

He was a new father — his daughter, Vinessa, was born just 3 months before his death

thecity.nyc/2021/6/14/2253…
Both Thomas & Jose were held on Rikers for alleged shoplifting — a low-level misdemeanor

They died awaiting trial

Under NY’s parole laws, a criminal court judge couldn't have released them if they’d wanted to

Less is More gives judges discretion to grant their release
Non-criminal (also called technical) violations — things like missing curfew or changing residence without approval — have sent thousands to Rikers for decades

When Less is More is implemented, parolees can no longer be sent to jail for these sorts of minor violations
When I visited Rikers on Monday, I talked to people who were waiting MONTHS for their hearings

No toilets

No beds

No fresh air

We need to decarcerate immediately, not wait until March 2022
.@GovKathyHochul announced that 191 ppl would be released today

This is a great first step — but we must continue to implement

1000 ppl on Rikers are eligible for release under #LessIsMoreNY & we can't continue to jail more for minor parole violations
I’m proud of my colleague @phara4assembly for championing Less is More & our legislature for passing it

I’m excited that the gov signed it today

But those on Rikers can't wait 5 months — @GovKathyHochul & @NYSDOCCS Commissioner Annucci must implement #LessIsMoreNY immediately

People often ask what socialists mean when we say we want to "decommodify" housing.

Basically, we want to move away from a situation where most people access housing by purchasing it on the market & toward a situation where the state guarantees high-quality housing to all. (1/8)
Big Real Estate & the politicians they purchase want you to think that's a fantasy.

But in some places, it's a reality.

In Vienna, 62% of residents live in beautifully constructed social housing, with ample green space & vibrant community life. (2/8) huffpost.com/entry/vienna-a…
How do they do it?

One-third of all new apartments constructed every year in the city are funded by the government & commissioned by non-profit housing associations, funded by a mix of income & corporate taxes.

The result? Just compare the rents in Vienna to those in NYC: (3/8)
