When I first started going on TV as a political "pundit" it was unheard of to not have literally years of political experience. If you were "camera ready" it helped. Then it turned into a free-for-all of young women w/no experience but w/ insider boyfriends getting them on TV
Putting Roger Ailes' backwash next to David Gergen as if "colleagues" is a disservice to viewers, actual political operatives, and to journalism itself. It's also dangerous since lawmakers do, in fact, adjust how they do their work, in reaction to these pundits. It matters.
I remember one of them offering "analysis" on then-candidate Romney re: Virginia primary: "Romney would really like to win Virginia"(really?? DUH!) and she lliterally had no idea what the strategy was, polling, history, political environment, or how endorsements played.
This same "political analyst" for years on TV didn't know the difference between a presidential caucus and a primary. Or the difference between a committee hearing and a committee markup.

If congressional Dems hadn't let Michael Caputo off the hook for lying under oath to Congress about his dealings with Russians during the 2016 campaign, and CNN had not made him a TV star pundit, he'd NEVER have been at HHS to implement the COVID strategy to infect & kill us.1/4
Letting Trump criminals skate has big, dangerous, and even deadly consrquences. Trump "respects" people who get on TV and people who get away with crimes, which is why he put Caputo at HHS. Congressional Dems need to acknowledge their role. 2/4
Yes, referring Caputo to DoJ at that time would've resulted in Sessions letting him off the hook. But it also would have made it less likely that CNN would've elevated Caputo to "respected pundit" and Trump would never have placed him at HHS to spread COVID. Harsh, but true 3/4
I remember seeing GOP outcast, clownish Roger Stone in his wide-striped mobster suits on TV here & there in some association with Trump. But that was it. I think Ailes & O'Reilly played ball with him bcs they thought he was a clown and it'd be fun. Zucker was a different story /2
But Trump and Putin had laid the groundwork and the networks were in place, so he very soon had these guys by the doo-dads. Washington power players had no idea the power center (media) in NYC was where the strings were beng pulled, since DC is the center of political power /3
Trump/Putin worked that "element of surprise". Created chaos, if you will. Establishment Republicans in DC were adamantly against Trump, but the media power centers in NYC were pumping him into every living room in America -- a constant feed. Media vs Establishment GOP. /4
5 years ago today, Trump had Jeff Zucker ban me from @CNN after this segment w/Kayleigh. CNN even scrubbed the transcript from their archives, then gave Kayleigh a paid contract.

Trump then took to Twitter to defame me. Just completely lied about me. CNN is still really ok with this.
We are in for months & years of uncovering the crimes of Trump and his associates, the political intrigue and ethical breaches, past associations etc. Incidents of the past 5+ years will take on new legal and political meaning as new info comes to light and dots are connected 1/4
We rely on media to get it right & to utilize experts and people with a history, working knowledge and real experience in this arena. It's imperative that editors and TV bookers & producers do their homework and take this seriously when booking guests and signing contributors 2/4
We all paid a price when Zucker did Trump's bidding, banned key critics in an effort to keep Trump in the race for ratings, & hired Trump sycophants despite being proven liars or others who are unqualified. We suffer when pals, girlfriends, relatives are passed off as experts 3/4
Sure, George was just so gosh darn naive about Trump even when his wife was trashing Trump when the Conways backed Cruz and then so innocently and naively switched to backing Trump. Golly Gee Wiz!
When George ran out of opportunities in Trump world, he made himself useful infiltrating NeverTrump to get support for Kavanaugh etc, playing the long game to pack the federal judiciary for long after Trump was gone. It worked. It's why Trump didn't lay a glove on him.
George stepped into the spotlight as NeverTrump and joined the DC meetings just weeks before Kennedy announced his retirement and George's pal Kavanaugh was nominated. George helped get NeverTrump support for Kav so Collins etc could feel safe voting to confirm.
I'd like to share some of the many tweets Michael Caputo tweeted as I had two family members lying in hospitals a continent apart. I responded and he had the fake Jack Posobiec bot & troll army swarm their right wing pal at USA Today (2nd run at me after first effort failed) 1/8
