Schumer on CR & debt: "We'll take up a continuing resolution to avoid a needless gov't shutdown & provide emergency funding necessary to settle Afghan refugees & those devastated by this summer's natural disasters.We must also work on bipartisan basis to extend the debt ceiling."

Schumer on the Senate Parliamentarian's ruling last night not to allow immigration provisions in the Democrats' $3.5T budget reconciliation bill: "Was extremely disappointing. It saddened me. It frustrated me. It angered me. But make no mistake the fight continues."

Schumer:"Senate Democrats have prepared alternative proposals & we'll be holding addt'l mtgs w/the Senate Parliamentarian in the coming days." Notes he's working w/Sens Durbin, Padilla, Menendez, Lujan & Cortez Masto to "find best option available" for citizenship for immigrants.

Schumer:"Leader McConnell amazingly and cravingly said Republicans are united in opposition to raising the debt ceiling. Shame...Should Republicans careen our country towards a default, our country could actually be plunged into recession...Shame, shame on the Republican Leader."

McConnell from Senate floor opposing the debt limit increase: "Since Democrats decided to go it alone, they will not get Senate Republicans’ help with raising the debt limit. I have explained this clearly and consistently for two months now."

McConnell: "We do not have divided government. Democrats do not need our help. They have every tool to address the debt limit on their own: the same party-line process they used to ram through inflationary spending in March and already plan to use again this fall."

McConnell: "This might inconvenience Democrats. It might delay their next reckless taxing and spending spree. But Democrats cannot risk the full faith and credit of our nation to serve their own partisan timelines."

McConnell announces his opposition to debt limit increase being included in the CR:"Senate Republicans would support a clean continuing resolution that includes appropriate disaster relief & targeted Afghan assistance. We will not support legislation that raises the debt limit."
