Sitting in on the Place for Hate? zoom. You can find info to join here: facebook.com/events/4933203…
Agenda:
Pope, Lassiter, and Simpson had antisemitic incidents.
The hard work cannot happen if educators are barred from having discussions about hate, privilege, social problems, history, etc.
A timeline of the issues in @CobbSchools regarding racism and hate in the schools
Clips of public comments going back to 2017 are being shared. Review multiple prior incidents and lack of response by district and/or board.
Far too many schools named as sites of incidents of hate. No chief diversity officer.
In Summer 2021, the @CobbSchools board passed an anti-CRT resolution. The board member who introduced the resolution could not define CRT nor explain how it was in schools, if it even was. Cited misinformation from questionable sources.
The @ADL #NoPlace4Hate curriculum was removed in Spring 2021. Counselors were directed to not use their materials.
Prior to the ban, 21 schools had begun using the program, No Place for Hate.
The program is available for K-12 and addresses bullying and other biases.
Per a stakeholder: Counselors were told that the curriculum was removed due to complaints from parents about it being affiliated with @ADL
Action Steps:
You MUST sign up to speak on the day before at 7pm: cobbk12.org/page/34203/pub…
The Vice Chair for the board is the representative for Pope, fyi.
@WilenskyforGA is planning to speak at the board during public comment. Only Jewish member of the state House, I believe.
If you know of other incidents please submit a report to the ADL adl.org/reportincident
@EastCobbUMC, the Jewish community of Cobb is planning to come out to stand in solidarity and to stand up and speak up. You have been such strong supporters of Cobb's families. I hope your members and likeminded Cobb citizens of all faiths or no faith also come out. <3
Per a stakeholder: Youth speakers at prior meetings have been heckled, mocked, had slurs yelled at them. Heartbreaking.
How to file a complaint with the @usdoegov OCR: www2.ed.gov/about/offices/….
How to file a complaint with GA DOE: gadoe.org/School-Improve…
Wear blue and white on Thursday. Even if you can't speak, show up.
If you are a Cobb resident and a person of faith, please urge your faith community to come out in support of the Jewish community. #ThisIsCobb
Per a stakeholder: Pope HS closed bathrooms to address the TikTok damage. The bathroom left open? The one that had the antisemitic graffiti. Students were effectively forced to see it until the admin was forced by public outcry to clean it up.
Meeting wrapped at 7:35pm. @threadreaderapp unroll, please

Per a stakeholder, also re:the hate crime incident at Pope and others: 'Cobb’s ban on talking about bias, hate and race make it impossible for school counselors to guide students through difficult and complex conversations in developmentally appropriate ways as we are trained'
'In absence of being allowed to support students (the ones harmed AND the ones inflicting the harm) through this so they all end up doing better and being healthy emotionally, harsh punishments will be the go to'
This stakeholder has spoken to @ADL/ @ADLSoutheast and fears that the ban on CRT is an effective gag order on Cobb employees from discussing these issues with students, even when needed. Stakeholder fears the situation will get worse due to lack of addressing appropriately.
