So why do we bother having doctors, lawyers, plumbers or electricians etc? Experts are of course not infallible. Knowledge shifts and improves. But to suggest a 12 year old girl is capable of ‘informing’ a doctor about the impact of testosterone on her body is insane.

What we are seeing here is prime example of ex post facto rationalisation - I.e simply interpreting everything that happened as support for what you want to do. We all do it.

Expertise and professional training is supposed to act as protection against the uncritical adoption of a moral position which then distorts facts to support it. An electrician who thinks electricity is governed by his own moral universe will soon be dead, for example.
And a doctor who thinks the answer to an assessment of Gillick competence is to be ‘informed’ by a 12 year old as to best practice in the field of endocrinology, has not merely failed in their assessment but has revealed themselves unfit to practice any kind of medicine.
Internet conspiracy theorists, pounding away in their basements often have tiny audiences and little influence. Lawyers/doctors however have immediate and serious impact on their clients and patients lives. so important that they are guided by reality, not their saviour complex.
that’s why professionals are regulated, why those working with electricity, gas and water have to undertake recognised training and meet certain standards. Let’s hope what transpires in the Webberley Tribunal shows the Court of Appeal was right to trust doctors’ ethical framework
