"China will step up support for other developing countries in developing green and low-carbon energy, and will not build new coal fired projects abroad" President #Xi
What does the future hold for Pakistan's energy sector, the majority of which is on coal fired projects? #CPEC
Needless to say, it seems a little unfair to be entirely against the coal fired projects operating under #CPEC, as energy was Pakistan's dire need at the time, which would not have been fulfilled using renewable energy sources alone.
The #CPEC coal projects also reflect on diversifying Pakistan's energy generation away from fuel oil towards coal, to decrease generation cost and conserve foreign exchange.
The coal power projects use modern super critical technology units, which emit much lesser GHG emissions compared the fuel oil plants they are replacing. It is vital to note that the developed countries operating on renewable energy had a huge chunk of coal power initially.
Coal in the US generates about 20% of the country's electricity. It accounted for 39% in 2014, 33% in 2015, 30.4% in 2016, 30.0% in 2017, 27.4% in 2018, 23.5% in 2019, and 19.3% in 2020. #Pakistan has a long way to go, but we're getting there.
