.@DrTedros and @WHOEMRO's Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari concluded their visit to Kabul. #Afghanistan’s health system is on the brink of collapse. Unless urgent action is taken, the country faces an imminent humanitarian catastrophe 👉 bit.ly/3nUKLee #StayAndDeliver
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic The visit allowed @DrTedros and Dr Al-Mandhari to witness the immediate needs of the Afghan people firsthand and meet with stakeholders to define ways to urgently scale up our health response. bit.ly/3nUKLee #StayAndDeliver
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic Cuts in donor support to #Afghanistan’s health project Sehetmandi have left thousands of health facilities without funding for medical supplies & salaries for health staff. With reduced operations, health providers are forced to make hard decisions on who to save & who to let die
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic Only 17% of all Sehatmandi health facilities in #Afghanistan are fully functional. This breakdown in health services is having a rippling effect on the availability of basic & essential health care, emergency response, polio eradication, & #COVID19 vaccination efforts.
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic 9 of 37 #COVID19 🏥 have already closed & all aspects of the response have dropped, incl surveillance, testing & vaccination. Swift action is needed to work towards reaching the national goal of vaccinating at least 20% of the population by the end of 2021 bit.ly/3nUKLee
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic #Afghanistan is one of two countries in the world where #polio remains endemic. However, the polio programme will struggle to respond if the basic immunization infrastructure begins to collapse around it. bit.ly/3nUKLee #StayAndDeliver
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic WHO particularly emphasizes the need for women to maintain access to education, health care, and to the health workforce. With fewer health facilities operational and less female health workers reporting to work, female patients are hesitant to seek care.
bit.ly/3nUKLee
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic WHO is committed to:
1) working with partners to invest in the health education of girls & women, & continue training female health workers
2) support an extensive trauma programme that includes training, supplies and equipment for 130 hospitals and 67 blood banks
#StayAndDeliver
@DrTedros @WHOEMRO @WHOAfghanistan @UN_News_Centre @UNNewsArabic .@DrTedros and Dr Al-Mandhari reiterate WHO’s long-term commitment to advancing the health of all people in #Afghanistan and remind all stakeholders of our collective obligations today and in the months and years ahead. bit.ly/3nUKLee #StayAndDeliver

LIVE: @DrTedros' briefing on the health situation in #Gaza to the @UN Security Council twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"Let me be clear from the outset that I fully understand the anger, grief and fear of the Israeli people following the horrific, barbaric and unjustifiable attacks by Hamas and other armed groups on Israeli civilians on the 7th of October.

The killing of 1,400 people, and injuries to more than 7,200 others, is bad enough. For the survivors and families of victims, the mental health consequences will endure for a long time to come.

WHO is gravely concerned for the health and well-being of Israeli hostages in Gaza, many of whom are older people, children and those with urgent medical needs"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros @UN "Two weeks ago, I spoke with families of hostages, and I will meet them in Geneva next week. I feel their heartache and fear"-@DrTedros

Media briefing on the health situation in Gaza and Israel, and other global health issues with @DrTedros twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"We are running out of words to describe the horror unfolding in Gaza.

Since Hamas’s horrific attacks on Israel on the 7th of October, more than 10,000 people have been killed, including over 8,500 in Gaza and 1400 in Israel. In both Israel and Gaza, 70% of those killed are women and children"-@DrTedros
"More than 21,000 are injured and more than 1.4 million people in Gaza have been displaced.

The situation on the ground, in Gaza, is indescribable.

Hospitals crammed with the injured, lying in corridors;

Morgues overflowing;

Doctors performing surgery without anaesthesia;

Thousands of people seeking shelter from the bombardment;

Families crammed into overcrowded schools, desperate for food and water;

Toilets overflowing and the risk of disease outbreaks spreading;

And everywhere, fear, death, destruction, loss"-@DrTedros

In 1969, Tu Youyou was tasked to search for antimalarial drugs.  She turned to ancient Chinese #TraditionalMedicine books & discovered artemisinin. In 2015, Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize for her work on #malaria, which has saved millions of lives.

After testing – unsuccessfully -- over 240 000 compounds for use in antimalarials, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, head of the Project 523 to discover a cure for chloroquine-resistant malaria, turned to traditional Chinese medical literature for clues. There, she and her team found a reference to sweet wormwood to treat intermittent fevers. In 1971, Tu Youyou’s team isolated artemisinin, an active compound in sweet wormwood that was particularly effective in treating malaria. Artemisinin is now recommended by the World Health Organization as the first and second line of treatment for malaria....

When Dr Luis Miramontes stabilised the synthetic hormone, norethindrone, he was unaware of his major contribution to women’s health and history.
