#Thread | While working on a fact-checking story, I contacted the person who was the subject of the viral piece of misinformation. I asked him the questions required for the story.
Once I was done, he wanted to check if he could ask some questions. (1/n)
The man was gently asked, "Brother, when will this end?"
"My family and I have stopped going out because of the viral video. We are scared," he went on to say.
I could only tell him that it would take a while before people stopped sharing. (2/n)
He then, jokingly, asked, "Will I continue to face this embarrassment every year?"
He already knew the answer, probably from talking to other fact-checkers, and when I took a pause, he understood what my answer was going to be. (3/n)
It takes seconds to hit share or forward a message, but we don't realise the real-life impact of sharing "fake news".
So, please think twice before sharing anything that evokes any kind of strong emotion. Not everyone can make a joke while they are scared for their life. (n/n)
