As a wise man once told me during the Clinton Administration, "we're really good at finding 1000 reasons to do something, but never just one." What he meant was Democrats like white papers, long lists of reasons to take action & complex arguments are impossible to communicate.
The problem with the $3.5 T reconciliation package (Build Back Better) is not its size, the boldness and sweeping nature of the initiative are just what's needed, it's that it's hard to translate why it's essential to average voters, hard to communicate how it'll help them.
It needs to be broken down to a few key points, an easy to frame and understand argument about the good it will do, how it will help right away, how it will transform lives for the better. It's a bill about creating jobs and restoring opportunity and fairness to American life.
It's about enhancing the opportunities that exist for all Americans and about better protecting us all. It's about remaking the US economy for the 21st Century. I'm not sure what the exact framing is...but it is clear to me it must be simpler and more resonant.

It is important that the Dems pass the most robust infrastructure and reconciliation packages possible. Every cut made to the reconciliation package weakens it...and ends up hurting average Americans. But even a weakened bill is progress and strengthens the president & the party.
But these packages are about more than that. They are also about giving political momentum to the one party in America that actually seeks to defend democracy at a time when the opposition is actively, relentlessly working to undermine it.
A failure to pass the infrastructure bill & a robust reconciliation package may strengthen GOP chances to regain the House & Senate in 2022. If either happens the result will be voter suppression, obstruction, & other destructive measures like gratuitous efforts to impeach Biden.

The GOP is threatening to blow up the US economy with their insanely reckless debt ceiling gambit. They would damage the lives of every American and weaken the country at a critical moment. Yet most Americans don't know or understand this. That is a failure of the media.
But ensuring the public understands the damage the GOP may do & ensures they are held accountable is the responsibility of everyone in the Democratic Party. Admittedly, it is difficult to drive home the message of GOP irresponsibility each & every time they do something damaging.
After all, they are actively seeking to destroy our democracy, block critical & urgently needed investments in our future, obstruct & reverse efforts to contain a devastating pandemic, undermine our national security by blocking two out of three nominees for top natsec jobs...

With every passing day, it looks less like we have one nation divided by differing political beliefs and more like we have two warring countries battling each other within shared borders. One side represents and seeks to preserve the United States. The other seeks to destroy it.
If the goal of the GOP is, at it appears to be, gut our democracy, to disenfranchise massive portions of our population, to impose the views of the minority on the majority, to attack principles like tolerance, that no individual is above the law, and equity...
...to literally reject reality and demonstrable facts and embrace an alternative reality founded in lies and dangerous to the health of the nation, our environment, our ideals and our standing in the world, then we have left the realm of political debate.

A couple of years before 9/11, I participated in a scenario exercise about terror threats that Wall Street might face. It was on the top floor of the World Trade Center. It was sponsored in part by Cantor Fitzgerald.
Tragically, a number of those who attended from that firm died in the attack. Not too long after the attack, I recall running into Howard Lutnick, the chairman of the firm, and I will never forget the look in his eyes, how haunted he was by the losses on that day.
On the day itself, I was on the phone with a friend whose apartment had a view of the World Trade Center. He stopped talking and just started repeating "oh my God, oh my God" and then he told me to turn on my television because a plane had flown into one of the twin towers.

Another failed NY Times oped by Bret Stephens. Is it a bigger failure for Stephens (who is consistently bad...but seldom this bad) or the editors at The NY Times (who chose to give this kind of fact-ignoring, reality twisting sophistry a platform)?

Biden has presided over a logistical miracle w/the vaccine distribution, an unprecedented economic recovery, more job creation than any other in his first 6 months, undoing of Trumpian damage done by executive order, record appointment of judges (& w/unprecedented diversity)...
...reentering the Paris Accord and the WTO, leading the world in vaccine diplomacy, ending a 20 year disaster of a conflict, getting 125,000 people out of Afghanistan in a matter of weeks in the face of huge challenges, making combatting the climate crisis a priority,...

And now, the latest Biden report from the Conventional News Network...

It's been a rough summer for the president folks because...
--Job growth slowing slightly (although yes, Biden has created more jobs in his first six months than any president in history)
--COVID spiking (although yes, the admin performed a miracle getting the vaccine out & the GOP has systematically undermine admin efforts to save lives)
--Afghanistan exit chat (although yes, the president ended a futile 20 year war and the administration managed to evacuate 125,000 people so far in one of the biggest humanitarian airlifts every and ending wars is chaotic by nature)
