I was walking to my house - not 100 yards away - when this man on a motorcycle rode up next to me, made a kissing sound, and grabbed my ass. He then sped off, turned around and waved. I make this walk all the time. This is my home. (Thread)
NOTHING will happen to him. And he’s robbed me of my sense of safety in my neighborhood. He will chuckle about this to himself. He might do worse to someone later. The night is still young.
Every time I think the needle is turning, i get a reality check.
I’m trying to get the CCTV footage from the area but is there anything else I can do to find out who he is?
Asking the neighbourhood for CCTV footage and my God, you should see the difference between how women react when I tell them, and the men.
Thank you everyone for your good wishes. I put this out there to see how I could go about identifying him. I hope by tomorrow we’ll have the footage and the registration no. of his bike. Am I hopeful of getting this guy to see that there are consequences to violating a woman?
This is painful for me to admit as an activist, but no. I don’t think it will lead to anything. I don’t think a night or two in jail, some roughing up (which no… police brutality is wrong, without exception.) will lead to meaningful change. So why do this at all?
Tbh, I’m trying to find this guy because of the kindness the manager of a nearby salon showed me when I asked her if she could check the CCTV footage. She was wrapping up for the night but took my number, promised to call me first thing in the morning.
She doesn’t know me. I actually go to her rival salon. She reached out and held my shoulder, “Dil kyun chota kar rahi ho? Hum hain na?”
That moment of tenderness made me wonder - are we soft because we’re so raw from this happening to women around us all the time? Did she know to be soft because she knew from experience that that’s what I needed the most?
But yeah, if I catch that asshole - I’ll post his face here. If only for a moment, it would be nice to feel like I’m in control.
