1/ Excited to share my new paper w @radleyhorton in @NatureClimate on exceptional land warming in coastal northeastern US and its connection to atmospheric circulation changes and AMOC-related SST increase in the adjacent shelf region of the Atlantic. nature.com/articles/s4155… 🧵
3/ @chriscmooney et al published a story in 2019 (part of ‘2C: Beyond the Limit’ series that won Pulitzer) highlighting warming in the Northeast.
+ 🧵 by Mooney:
Our study tries to explore potential links to AMOC & NAO.
4/ A number of recent studies show that the AMOC is slowing down and one consequence of that is stronger SST warming off the North American coast. Here is a blog post by @rahmstorf from 2020 summarizing several recent studies: realclimate.org/index.php/arch…
6/ We discuss possible links between NE US warming, AMOC, & NAO using obs+reanalysis data. Also include prelim analyses of #CMIP6 expts (hist, HighResMIP) & CESM-LE showing models' ability to capture local features, highlighting the imp of high res models. nature.com/articles/s4155…
7/ This work raises qs abt ocean-atmos (AMOC-NAO) interactions on diff timescales (lead-lags, drivers), seasonality of regional SST-SAT changes, future projections, & impacts.
So much to do 😃
... so little funding 😟
Pls reach out if you have ?s, thoughts abt the paper

So I had a rather unpleasant encounter with the US Border Patrol in New Mexico yesterday. ‘Deportation’ threat several times …for no good reason. 1/
My partner & I were traveling through NM for the past week, & yday, on our way to Albuquerque from Las Cruces, we came across a Border Checkpoint on Rt185 ~100 miles north of the border (didn’t know they existed so far north). When asked if we were US citizens, we said no. 2/
The border patrol officer asked for our passports and visas, which we didn’t carry (we had soft copies and, of course, we did have our driver’s licenses) since we were traveling within the country. We have traveled extensively within the US with only DLs for the past 15 years. 3/
