We get a lot of questions about the cost of sequencing and how our technologies have driven down the average cost over the years. So, let’s take a closer look.
Remember, the original human genome cost ~$3B USD and took 13 years to sequence. Today, NovaSeq 6000 can sequence 48 human genomes every two days for $600 USD per sample. How did we get here?
In 2014, we delivered the $1000 genome with the launch of the HiSeq X Ten platform. Hitting the $1000 genome had been our goal for a long time, but we didn’t stop there.
In 2017 we launched the NovaSeq 6000, and then with the release of NovaSeq 6000 version 1.5 reagents in 2020, the $600 USD genome became a reality.
Our relentless commitment to innovation has driven down the cost of sequencing more than 500-fold since our first NGS platform.
Since 2017 we’ve seen a 64% reduction in costs and the broad availability of the $600 USD genome, allowing more customers to sequence genomes than ever before.
The 64% reduction is the average price per Gb based on data across our entire installed base of high-throughput systems from 2017-2021. The graph may look bumpy because this is #realdata that often varies from quarter to quarter depending on the mix of kits shipped.
Costs aside, with our latest technologies, today more labs have access to advanced, data-rich applications that allow them to excel in their field of research, track and understand viruses such as #COVID-19 and treat critically ill newborns.
Thank you to our scientists and engineers for their relentless innovation. Thank you to our customers for their pioneering spirit.
Your advancements further our mission of improving human health by unlocking the power of the genome.
