It would be so easy for me to joke about the “results” of the Arizona election recount. Republicans there yelled: “There’s no way Joe Biden won this election! There must be fraud! Let’s bring in the Cyber Ninjas!” #velshi
2/15
10 months later, the “so called” audit determined that Biden actually won Arizona’s most populous county by an even greater margin than was originally reported. #velshi
3/15
10 months, with a hand-picked firm with zero election audit experience conducting a grossly partisan fake audit, and even then they couldn’t get the results they wanted. This is too easy. The jokes write themselves. #velshi
4/15
I could tell you the Cyber Ninjas were so *stealthy* that even they couldn’t see their own failure coming. Or I could say that this is what you get when you listen to a guy that sells foam pillows on TV. I could...but I won’t. #velshi
5/15
Despite the fact that most-not all- but most leaders in Arizona made themselves into a laughingstock, what they did was deeply corrosive to the future of democracy in America. The results of this “fraudit” don’t matter because it was illegitimate from the start. #velshi
6/15
To say that this was a “win” for Biden or a “loss” for Trump gives stock to a scam: a theft of freedom in the United States of America. And if you think it stops here, you are dead wrong. #velshi
7/15
Arizona was not the first - and it will not be the last - state to try and strip away voting rights from its citizens. It just so happens that Arizona was kind of bad at it. #velshi
8/15
AZ Republicans hired a sham company that had zero experience with election audits, their leaders and organizers had partisan motives. Oh yeah, and THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF WIDESPREAD VOTER FRAUD IN THE 2020 ELECTION. None. Not in Arizona. And not anywhere else. #velshi
9/15
But here’s the danger: Arizona will now be the poster child for what *not* to do when trying to overturn an election; basically, a user guide on "How To Lose A Fake Recount THAT YOU CONTROL in 10 Months.” The next state to try it won’t be as stupid as Arizona was. #velshi
10/15
It’s already happening in Republican states around the country. It might not look like the spectacle that was on display in Arizona: with red and blue magic makers, alleged bamboo ballots, Cyber Ninjas, and tampered voting machines. #velshi
11/15
It does look like this: restrictive voting laws, poll watchers who intimidate voters, polling locations disappearing, and redistricting. And that’s what should scare you. #velshi
12/15
Just because an injustice doesn't have a direct impact on your life does not mean it isn’t your problem. Because if just ONE person in this country is prevented from voting, then our democracy is incomplete. Our continuing attempts at a more perfect union fall short #velshi
13/15
One day you are enjoying the privileges of this democracy, and then poof, they’re gone. Almost like, dare I say it...a ninja? The fraudit in AZ was never the real threat. The Cyber Ninjas were amateur grifters who had one job they couldn’t deliver for Republicans. #velshi
14/15
There are real, more competent forces at work attempting to dismantle our democracy by trying to decide who’s votes count. And they just might succeed where Arizona failed. #velshi
15/15
Democracy itself hangs in the balance, and our work here is far from done. #velshi

Americans have an obsession with crime. It often leads your local news, we are glued to TV shows about it, and we get fully invested-for good reason - in the gripping stories of kidnapped women & murderous spouses - mostly men - that flash across our screens. #velshi
2/18
But our concern about violence against women is imperfect, or at least incomplete because, when looked at in its totality, crimes and injustices against women go unsolved, uncovered and unpunished at alarming rates around the world. #velshi

The death of Gabby Petito has captivated the nation. Her boyfriend - whom police say remains a person of interest in the investigation - is still missing. What happened to Gabby Petito is horrible. And her case deserves the attention it’s getting. #velshi

After 20 years, the footprints of American boots on the ground in Afghanistan have faded away. While a majority of American’s think that’s a *good* thing for America and its soldiers, the people of Afghanistan are now living lives of palpable uncertainty. #velshi
2/15
38 million Afghans are waiting, fearful, to find out how their latest rulers will govern. Spoiler alert: it will not end well for anyone who does not believe exactly what the Taliban believes in. #velshi

That’s not America’s fault, but we have played a central role for the last twenty years by starting something we could not finish. The question now for America is what do we do about it? #velshi

Hurricane Ida will go down in history as one of the most impactful hurricanes to ever hit America. And it is a prime example of a natural event made more dangerous by the #climatecrisis. #velshi
2/15
Ida came ashore in Louisiana on Sunday as a fierce category 4 hurricane. With sustained winds of 150-miles-per hour, it tore off roofs, snapped power lines and crushed Louisiana’s power grid. #velshi
3/15
Nearly a week later, hundred of thousands of people are still without power. And then - *wham* - with just a little more juice left in her, Ida lashed the Northeast. #velshi

That Republican tax bill gifted the wealthiest of corporations $233 billion in tax cuts, according to the Center for American Progress. $233 billion in tax cuts to corporations. $69 billion to lift low-income families above the poverty line. #velshi
12/16
Those tax cuts to ppl & companies that didn’t need them could have solved American poverty. Taxing a few millionaires & billionaires could feed millions of children, give poor & low wealth people things like dental care & eyeglasses, or provide care for the elderly. #velshi
13/16
This shouldn’t be a tough decision, but greed gets in the way every time. I’m not arguing that you should like taxes. You should like tax increases even less. We should insist on government that spends our money as efficiently as possible. #velshi

Democrats are working to push through a transformative $3.5 trillion dollar bill - a crucial step toward accomplishing core agenda items including strengthening the social safety net, expanding paid family and medical leave, and more accessible childcare. #velshi
2/16
It also includes universal pre-K, tuition-free community college, lowering the Medicare eligibility age and expanding benefits to include dental, vision and hearing. Big, expensive stuff. Or is it? Expensive is a matter of perspective: pay now or pay later. #velshi
3/16
It does require an outlay of taxpayer money. Dema want Americans & large corporations to foot the bill for this legislation. Republicans say: no dice. Too expensive. It’ll raise the deficit. Can’t pass costs onto our grandkids now, can we? It’s a nonsense argument. #velshi

We are now at a new stage of the Pandemic. One that I really didn't think we’d reach in America. It’s not the variants that surprise me; that's to be expected. It’s the resistance to the free, life-saving vaccine. #velshi
2/15
Right now, just over 50% of Americans are fully vaccinated. Unlike in most of the world, we have no remaining issues with people not being able to get the vaccine like we did in the beginning of the year. #velshi
3/15
Anyone in America who remains unvaccinated is so by choice. That’s a problem. It’s not a difference of opinion thing. It’s a public health emergency thing, and it’s needs to end. #velshi
