2. Unlike just five or ten years ago, it's now only the odd one out who is not alarmed about the climate crisis.

Especially the younger generation doesn't need to be convinced of the seriousness of our global challenges.

#youth #schoolstrike…

3. Being alarmed doesn't always lead to concrete action.

Nobody can ignore the daily news about extreme weather disasters or the latest scientific report about the climate crisis.

But our leaders still don't treat the new reality as a crisis.

In my role @CLF, I often have to think about what our future looks like in Massachusetts. As the #ClimateCrisis looms over us, with impacts like increasingly frequent extreme weather, we know we have to do something – and do something now. (1/9)
And we know what we need to do. It’s time for us to leave behind the polluting fossil fuels at the root of #ClimateChange & transition to #CleanEnergy. #DirtyGas is one of those fuels responsible for the #ClimateCrisis. (2/9)
#BigGas like to tell us that they’re on our side: that they care about affordable bills, reliable service, and our safety. But the truth is, they’re out for profit first and foremost. (3/9)

40% of young people worldwide are hesitant to have children due to climate change.

2. Recent research found that anxiety of the youth is related to perceived government inaction.

The @USChamber has launched a full court press against the #BuildBackBetter plan. But many of its corporate members say they support families & #ClimateAction. Their $ to the Chamber speaks louder than words. Tell them to back this historic agenda!

#ClimateCrisis has no borders and affects us all. It especially hurts those in poorer countries, which are also the countries that contribute the least to it. The richest 1% produce twice as much carbon emissions as the poorest half of the world’s population.

🧵We applaud Biden's decision to speak by phone with Chinese president Xi Jinping, but wonder why it took him 7 months since they last spoke. The world's been shaken by many disasters since then-couldn't he find time sooner to speak w/ the head of the world's 2nd largest economy?
Evidently Biden is unhappy that Chinese officials been subjecting US diplomats to propaganda barrages. Well, no surprise there: If you're not willing to speak with the man in charge, you can hardly be surprised when they're dismissive to your emissaries.
Also, while it's too bad Chinese officials have been hectoring US diplomats about our unfair treatment of China, you can hardly blame them when those same diplomats go around the world complaining about China's authoritarianism, human rights abuses, unfair trade practices, etc.

Is climate change going to be worse than expected?

Have scientists been systematically underestimating the impacts?

And if so how should we as science communicators convey this to the public & policy makers?

I delve into this unsettling topic in this 🧵 1/n
(Pic: L. Hogarth)
It’s a topic I’ve been pondering for some time. I wrote this blog post back in 2013 before IPCC’s AR5 report was published.

So what has happened since then? Are scientists still saying things are worse than predicted? 2/n…
The evidence certainly seems to point in that direction.

Let’s now turn to look at just a few of the many recent examples of scientists who have pointed this out.

I’ll then explore what is causing this bias and how we can perhaps address it. 3/n

It was great to see everyone (and a doggo) out for today’s Vernon on Fire: Climate Emergency Day of Action. Everyone there had the #ClimateCrisis as a priority for #Elxn44 #VernonBC #Shuswap.
A summary of the parties’ ~2030 GHG reduction targets was presented, ranging from the GPC’s plan of 60% to the PPC’s of 0%. Our vote look’s pretty simple based on these targets, right? But that alone won't work.
GHG targets don’t work stand-alone, because the targets need to be sustainable. Sustainable, not just to the next election (2022... 2025), or 2030, or 2050, but (effectively) forever: Existential issues are forever issues.

AOC is doing a good job of supporting Democrats and Biden's expansive bill that includes the #GND, while also calling out "fossil fuel lobbyists who brag about having members of Congress on speed dial." She is calling out Manchin by his actions. "We have to choose the science."
AOC says members of her community have had to remove bodies of people who died in basement apartments during flash floods and that this cannot continue. She cites the stats on how the overwhelming majority of Americans are ready to.address #ClimateCrisis.
Asked about Greg Abbott's comments on rape, AOC says she finds his comments "disgusting," and that "he doesn't understand biology 101," that it's six weeks before a menstruating person knows they have missed a period.

President @JoeBiden is visiting NY and NJ today to talk about #infrastructure in the wake of flooding. Talk that includes more $ for sea walls, levees, stormwater drains. But to solve flooding, we have to consider how #water behaves.
It can come from the sky, from the sea, and even from up from underground due to hydrological pressure. #ClimateCrisis is showing us a quantity of water our #infrastructure is not built to handle. B/c our concrete water infrastructure is inflexible.
Will @JoeBiden talk about natural #infrastructure? #wetlands, floodplains, and marshes are absorbent and flexible -- and also STORE CARBON to reduce climate change. Yet cities including NYC are building new development on filled-in wetlands.

A thread on #ClimateCrisis:
Melting Boundaries
Nature Knows No Nation and No Nation Knows Nature
In the global fora, the issue of #climate change has been a game of ‘passing the parcel’ where the parcel is global in all proportions – global threat, global impact, global mitigation.
#Climate is the varying weather conditions experienced annually aggregated over a long period of time. Unfortunately, politically, climate change has had much less traction than the climate itself in the last 30 years. Efforts have been debated, litigated and even acted upon.

Is this when Americans wake up to #ClimateCrisis? Not likely, says @jeffgoodell in @RollingStone "Evidence of cluelessness and short term greed is everywhere."…
He's not wrong. I've been on this beat 20 years and I'm not optimistic about humanity's ability to adapt; we have good qualities but we're also short-sighted and greedy. Still. The conversation has changed over my 20 years covering this.
Renewable energy prices have come waaay down. Regular people know the perils of fossil fuels. Some people are even talking about land-use change's 27 percent contribution to our emissions and how to address it. Young people are educated. And pissed.

Hurricane Ida will go down in history as one of the most impactful hurricanes to ever hit America. And it is a prime example of a natural event made more dangerous by the #climatecrisis. #velshi
Ida came ashore in Louisiana on Sunday as a fierce category 4 hurricane. With sustained winds of 150-miles-per hour, it tore off roofs, snapped power lines and crushed Louisiana’s power grid. #velshi
Nearly a week later, hundred of thousands of people are still without power. And then - *wham* - with just a little more juice left in her, Ida lashed the Northeast. #velshi
