its my own view of course, but that isnt why. the process just doesnt work the way he hypothesized it to. honestly, i did it. i took normal people to art spaces and to the woods and gave them acid and they eventually go back to being the same or just become more “how they are”.
i was thinking about timothy leary recently because someone brought up terrence mckenna, and i kind of view them as a one two step process. they were both ultimately wrong for different reasons, i dont even really hold it against them personally, they just didnt have the data.
its easy to imagine being a certain type of person and taking acid and then thinking, wow, we just need everyone to take this. but that didnt work, and whats mostly interesting for me about the space is that you still have people acting like this massive experiment never happened
im in a somewhat unique position as a lay person to have certain data, because (unfortunately) i was in a position to take totally normal (to use the parlance) not “turned on” people and give them acid, if they wanted, in a variety of situations, and then observe the effects.
for some people, there is “an effect”, but it usually wears off. i think the main, more interesting, thing that leary-ism and that worldview failed to anticipate is that there is a large portion of people for whom psychedelics are purely a sensory “cool” experience and thats it.
if youre around a large group of people that do psys, u know often it becomes: we should listen to some music. wow this music is crazy. lets look at something. wow, that looks crazy. lets touch something with a weird texture, wow thats crazy. what if we eat candy. wow thats crazy
basically the hypothesis that it magically gets people tuned into something higher isnt true and thats why his general operation failed. on the other side, people often just become more of what they already are. maybe they just didnt have the data but, thats usually what happens.
in my mind you can kind of place terrence mckenna after this. i used to be kind of a devotee of him to be honest, id like to do a thread on it sometime, but he realized the “we just need everyone to do this” hypothesis was false, so he reworked it slightly.
his idea and model was creating a dense core of intellectual and artistic individuals who would do it and then that dense core would radiate out and cause the transformation rather than the substance itself. well, this doesnt really work either, but for different reasons.
so i actually view myself as being downstream from both of these guys in a way. i can imagine being either of them, to be honest, im just later in time and i can look back and say, wow yeah, neither of these models worked, they dont play out, we have some errors in here.
the interesting thing for me is that people act like none of this ever happened. most people into psychedelics or promoting them just pretend all this never happened and adopt the same hypotheses basically. i suspect that in some way its intrinsic to the substance.
will do a thread sometime on terrence mckenna because hes definitely the person with the worldview i adopted the most at that time, i was [really really] into it, and as i realized he was wrong about a few specific things (not mentioned here), thats what led me “out of it”.
just worth noting as i think most people would imagine, from my view, that i like, hate these guys or something, but its not like that. im just in the future + have more data than them. its like trying to build a flying machine: some stuff sounded plausible but it just didnt work

this is what oversocialization is btw. anything that trips the “thats not what youre supposed to be doing” wire sets off abject panic and rage (and fear) instantly. theres no sliding scale - your perception of social norms become a binary.
its basically impossible to function now in normal society (for most of you, i know many of u know this) without understanding the thought process here. this person did not hear the words and assess them. its “he said something not positive about the thing” wired to “hes INSANE”.
people you deal with like this are not responding to information. they are responding to sensation (the sensation and feeling of being uncomfortable). you cannot reason someone out of a sensation, because its an intrinsic feeling reaction. this is not necessarily intuitive.

alright im stuck in my car rn and trying not to wake my wife up so its time for a thread on terrence mckenna. might have to pause at some point but lets do it.
so, if you dont know you can look him up, but he’s basically [the] mushroom guy. if you’re into mushrooms you would know who he is. mainly his ideas were disseminated in talks and a few books, he has a few interlocking theories about life, the mind, the universe, mushrooms, etc.
i suppose in the current popular “spiritual stuff” domain he would be most well known for coining the term “machine elf” for the beings people often see on dmt. he was an early DMT guy in the sense that he was talking about it when it was still ostensibly difficult to find.

yes, this is true - both in the sense that going completely down the political rabbit hole often leads to a theology (clearly observable), and in the sense that someones political views and the specifics of them invariably flow out of metaphysics that will constitute “a theology”
what basic rights do people have and why, and what does that even mean? look at all the traits someone has: which are intrinsic and which are incidental, and how does this affect how we would ideally group them? what does the ideal society look like, why? these entail metaphysics
most political differences people have even come back, imo, to a singular theological issue: what makes and determines reality? some people are playing a game where there are set conditions and we operate within them, some people are playing a game where we set all the conditions

i have often wondered if our early memories implant deep in us and effect us or if we remember them because of how we turned out. my earliest memory is visiting my great grandmother in the hospital and seeing a sunflower picture i made for her on the wall. epic foreshadowing.
i remember walking in this room, and, because i was short, it seemed like 30, 40 feet up on the wall, was this drawing of a sunflower. i can still see it in my mind. i remember thinking “woah, i made that”. im assuming i only had a tenuous grip on object permanence at this time.
but i do remember cognizing “wow. i made that. and its here... in this room, where these people are. thats crazy”. it was a classic little kid scribbley drawing of a sunflower. i had this memory but didn’t know what it was until i mentioned it to my mom, who told me the context.

one semiotic social-spiritual note that is interesting considering the last year is how "normal people" talk about illness and medical stuff with others. i first noticed this around 3 years ago when a friend got this medical problem, and i noticed how people talked about it [..]
i noticed that, all the time, if we were somewhere and he said, "yeah, I have X", people would say something like "oh man, my uncle died from that". it happened all. the. time. and he's just standing there like, "okay... cool. thanks... for that information...?".
since then i notice this quite often. that someone will mention having a medical problem or potentially having one and people will just immediately say something like that. "oh yeah, a lot of people are dying from that now", or something. that is socially acceptable, for sure.

more convinced than ever that all nutritional “categories” are made up. bread is high carb. potato is high carb. fruits are high carb. fruit and bread have nothing in common. this is emperors new clothes tier. eat an orange. eat a potato. tell me theyre similar. they are not.
now i get to go to the labcoat village so some witch doctor with the magic papers can explain that pineapple and bread secretly, beyond all methods of sensory perception, share some aura. some supraphysical ESSENCE they call “carbs”. once again i say show me a carb. you CANNOT
today students we will be opening the DIETARY NECRONOMICON. it was found in some persian ruins by an english merchant in the 1800s. everyone he knew died instantly when he opened it. this tome catalogs these various extra-sensory essences. the 10,000 “different kinds of carbs”.
