Dagon's presentation included the following diagram showing (on log scale) something to do with rogue DNS, that reminded me of the log scale graphic of time intervals between hits "from" Spectrum Health (similar in Alfa). Beyond that, I can't say.
it seems very clear (as I learn these issues) that it is easy to spoof hits from Alfa Bank to then dead mail1.trump-email.com by sending emails to Alfa Bank with fake email address - related to DDOS technology that Max-TeaLeaves crowd were expert in.
At a minimum, any responsible scientist ought to have noted this possibility in any reports to agencies and failure to do so was, at a minimum, academic misconduct by the university professors, even if it wasn't a crime.
