Record levels of deforestation are likely occurring in nationally protected parts of the Brazilian Amazon.

Here’s how we discovered this πŸ‘‡

#DailyClimateShow
Satellites monitor the Amazon and detect changes in the forest canopy. They issue warnings when they pick up signs of deforestation

trib.al/Owshqt7
Sky News analysed this data and found that the protected area with the most warnings issued to it this year was Jamanxim National Forest

trib.al/Owshqt7
Since 2019 this region in central Brazil has recorded deforestation alerts covering an area equivalent in size to the Isle of Wight - seen in black on this image πŸ‘‡

trib.al/Owshqt7
Much of the deforestation in Jamanxim has been linked to the neighbouring town of Novo Progresso

trib.al/Owshqt7
Cattle ranchers, gold miners, and loggers often use the town as a base before venturing into the forest

trib.al/Owshqt7
We focused our investigation on one plot of land we found on satellite imagery in the national forest 20 miles from Novo Progresso.

Here is an image of the area last year πŸ‘‡
trib.al/Owshqt7
But by June this year the forest had been removed πŸ‘‡

We wanted to see if we could find out who was behind this environmental damage

trib.al/Owshqt7
We used the land registry and other government databases to reveal a network of politicians and business people who are damaging the forest in Jamanxim.

But this instance was just one example of the forest being harmed...

trib.al/Owshqt7
This graph shows that in May this year, deforestation warnings in nationally protected areas of the Brazilian Amazon hit record levels

trib.al/Owshqt7
It continued a trend of increased forest damage in nationally protected zones since President Bolsonaro came to power in 2019

A mammoth graveyard, the sinking ground and the carbon hidden beneath the surface.

Sky’s @DiMagnaySky reports from Arctic Russia to find out what ancient animal remains the thawing permafrost is unveiling and what this has to do with climate change

#DailyClimateShow
This is one treasure of the thawing permafrost - a mammoth bone.

Here in Duvanny Yar lie other animals which roamed what were then Arctic grasslands in their millions during the Pleistocene era, from two million to fifteen thousand years ago

It was 30C when @DiMagnaySky arrived in Chersky - not quite the temperature you expect for Arctic Russia.

Nikita Zimov, who runs a scientific research station with his father just outside of Chersky, has a stark warning about permafrost πŸ‘‡

The top 10 warmest years for the UK since 1884 have occurred since 2002.

2019 alone broke four high temperature records, including the warmest winter day and the warmest Easter day - but it's surprisingly not one of the hottest years overall πŸ‘‡
