THREAD: Last week, after voting to send another $1 billion to the Israeli military, Congress also passed the “National Defense Authorization Act,” a bill that contains alarming provisions for supporters of human rights for Palestinians.
But before all the bad, @RepRashida, @repmarkpocan, and @RepAOC introduced an amendment to block the $735 million weapons deal between Boeing and the Israeli military. Unfortunately, the amendment was ruled out of the final bill.
The following concerning amendments were passed with bipartisan support, once again showing Congress’ hostility to Palestinian rights despite growing support from voters across the political spectrum. For a complete list check out @LaraFriedmanDC:
Amdt. 110 from @AndyBiggsAZ: “Expresses a sense of Congress about the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship.”
This amendment endorses continued U.S. support for and collaboration with the Israeli apartheid government that has committed countless human rights abuses against Palestinians, while maintaining a brutal military occupation over millions of Palestinians.
Amdt. 193 from @RepGarbarino and @JimLangevin “Establishes a Department of Homeland Security grant program to facilitate closer U.S.-Israel cybersecurity cooperation.”
The Israeli military, weapons, and cybersecurity contractors like the NSO Group and Anyvision have a documented track record of serious human and civil rights violations, and not just in Palestine.
Amdt. 232: from @RepDeanPhillips and @RepAGonzalez, Requires a report on how the US is working to improve Israel’s coordination with other regional militaries, and requires an analysis of initiatives to integrate the “Abraham Accords” into congressional programs.
This amendment endorses weapons deals and further collaboration with governments like the UAE that also violate human rights, and entrenches Trump-era policies that fly in the face of international law and Palestinian rights.
Amdt. 672: from @RepSchneider, @RepJoeWilson, @RepStephMurphy, @RepKManning, and @RepLoisFrankel, “Requires the creation of a U.S.-Israel Operations-Technology Working Group.” Frankel’s tweets
This working group would further be concerning collaboration between the U.S. and Israel, both of which have abused technology in cyber, space, and artificial intelligence, violating civil and human rights of Palestinians and people in the U.S.
But despite hostile legislation, a growing number of progressive members of Congress are joining with people of conscious to support Palestinian rights and freedom, from Washington D.C. to Palestine.

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the start of the Second Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israel's illegal occupation & apartheid.

Here is what happened 21 years ago:
Former Israeli "Defense" Minister & war criminal Ariel Sharon (who, according to an Israeli commission, bears "personal responsibility" for the 1982 massacres of Sabra & Shatila), intruded on Al-Aqsa, Palestinians' holiest Muslim site in Jerusalem, w/1,000 heavily armed soldiers.
The intrusion led to a confrontation with unarmed Palestinian demonstrators at the Noble Sanctuary, and resulted in several unarmed Palestinians being killed, triggering the 2nd intifada. But that was only the last straw after years of Israeli brutality and land theft.

THREAD: After progressives in Congress knocked down an additional $1 billion in military funding to Israel from a larger spending bill, conservative Democrats are introducing a new stand-alone bill to send an additional $1 billion to Israel to further fund its “Iron Dome.”
The #IronDome is a missile interceptor system developed by Israel and funded by U.S. taxpayers. It works to enforce Israel’s siege and blockade of Gaza.
In addition to the $3.8 billion in military funding that the U.S. provides Israel each year, the U.S. has already given approximately $1.7 billion to Israel for its Iron Dome.

THREAD: 6 Things to Know About the Iron Dome Funding Controversy

The efforts of progressives in Congress to stop Democratic and Republican leaders from giving another $1 billion in military funding to Israel have triggered an avalanche of misinformation and misdirection.
1) No Blank Check: Israel already receives $3.8 billion in U.S. military funding every year (more than any other country on the planet), and Israel’s “Iron Dome” is already funded to the tune of $1.7 billion.
Progressives are saying NO to a major increase of $1 billion in the already unjustifiable military funding to Israel.

THREAD: Today marks 28 years since the #OsloAccords, and Palestinians have gotten nothing but fewer rights, more settler land theft, and more Israeli violence. The "peace process" was a sham. Here’s how:
In an effort to quell the first intifada, the 1988 Palestinian uprising demanding freedom, the Israeli government entered into a series of agreements with the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) known as the Oslo Accords, thereby launching the so-called “peace process.”
The Oslo Accords established the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a constrained Palestinian “government” under ultimate Israeli rule, divided the West Bank into areas A, B, & C, all under varying levels of Israeli control, and fragmented Palestinians throughout historic Palestine.

THREAD: 6 Things to know about the Palestinian Authority's (PA) Crackdown on Dissent

1) PA police are effectively a subcontractor for Israel’s occupying army. PA police work closely with the Israeli army and operate under its overall control.
2) Many of the people arrested have also been imprisoned by the Israeli army for political reasons, some for extended periods without charge or trial.
Israel’s occupying army has targeted many of the same individuals for arrest for protesting and nonviolently resisting its brutal military rule and apartheid regime, sometimes imprisoning them without charge or trial ” which has been condemned by human rights groups.

THREAD: The Palestinian Authority arrested more than 20 peaceful protesters this weekend.
Since Saturday, hundreds of Palestinians have been gathering to protest against the Palestinian Authority (PA), the quasi-governmental body that rules parts of the occupied West Bank under the overall control of the Israeli army.
Protestors are calling for accountability for the death of activist Nizar Banat in the PA's custody.
