His family moved to Johannesburg 1933. Age 15, he joined the Entertainment Unit of SA Army in WW2. In 1946 he briefly enrolled at London's Royal Academy Dramatic Art.
He soon left RADA, and as Larry Skikne, appeared on stage in Manchester, this led to a film, House of Darkness (1948). His choice of stage name, Harvey, or Nichols, from upmarket London store, Harvey + Nichols.
