Seeing a lot of new people doing summaries now. I wonder whether we are the only one questioning some things we observed:
Q1) What is the value of summarising an article that can be read in less than 5 min?
Are we indulging on the laziness of content consumers and encouraging a habit of being able to read short form content like twitter only? Is that good for the community?
2) Are we summarising when we shouldn't? We are guilty of this too.
Why don't we see anyone summarising a poem? Or the results of a sports event? Because some things have to be experienced in its entirety, otherwise the full context is lost.
3) When we are summarising, we always struggle between retaining helpful contexts and reducing to essence. Remove too much, the content loses its personality. Retain too much, there's no value add.. Who decides? How to decide?
We've no answers.
4) How to juggle between summarising content for personal interest vs content for personal gains? Personal gains will be to gain followers / marketing / attention. Lately we seem to be doing more of the later, but this will hopefully be a good reminder to ourselves
We are here, first of all, to learn. That should by itself be a good reason to do summaries. We want to always remember that reason.
Next we want to leave a legacy we are proud of. We want the whole intern space to be elevated and not be diluted by lacklustre contents.
We want to set a benchmark, an industry standard of excellence that we can aspire and inspire towards.
Strong work ethics, impeccable standards, work that we are proud of.
Be so good that you are unforkable.
