And now some of the many costumes I saw along the way running @LondonMarathon — starting with the cupcake that passed me and left me behind. #LondonMarathon
The fire brigade kept us safe along the sidelines of @LondonMarathon and at one point, within the race course itself :) #LondonMarathon
Spent way too much time researching air quality monitors last night. Want outdoor one to better understand what's happening in our immediate area & contribute to maps for others. Want an indoor one to understand what quality is like when we have windows shut. FWIW, my rundown....
Let's start with outdoors. Turns out we have fairly sparse network of official sensors because: expensive! But been huge growth in unofficial sensors by people wanting better local data. Some articles:
PurpleAir seems pretty much the standard for outdoors monitoring. They maintain a popular map that lets you narrow in on areas and see what other owners are reporting. I *love* that you can toggle off those reporting indoor from outdoor sensors. Map: purpleair.com/map
I finally canceled my print newspaper delivery. Been putting it on vacation hold ever since COVID-19 began, back when we were hosing down any physical objects with disinfectant. Newspapers don't hold up well with that! It finally weaned me off a print paper. Still, bit sad....
Having grown up with print, I really appreciate the fast glance to take in stories, the serendipity of what I might discover. I'm having to teach myself how to get similar things online and it still doesn't quite feel right. I'll get there...
I've definitely come to reappreciate the importance of a home page. Like, it's really important what I'm being shown, to help me discover new and interesting stuff. I'm mostly at @latimes & a slight home page design I noticed a few weeks ago helped a lot...
The family is thrilled that I've now gotten one of those pulse oximeters to take readings along with the nightly temperature checks. Thrilled!
Pro tip. You don't get the best reading from a pulse oximeter when trying to force your son to use it while playing a game. It's OK. He was 99% when I tried again.
I got the @iHealthLabsUS iHealth Air, which finally came back in stock. Syncs to my phone, easy to switch between family members. Not FDA approved as medical device though, if you're really picky. Super easy to use & displays stats even without a phone ihealthlabs.com/fitness-device…
Had lovely break this weekend to a mountain cabin, first time out in four months. That is, after we first had to clean the rental ourselves. And more fun as @vrbo still wants to charge us a cleaning fee and kicks the can on that down to @vacasarentals that they rep...
When we arrived at our @vacasarentals cabin booked thru @vrbo, nothing had been cleaned despite supposed "extra" cleaning to be done. Kitchen dirty. Floors dirty. Trash in bins all around. Bathroom, fun! So we got to work & cleaned it all ourselves and got on with our weekend....
You'd think the response would be refund the cleaning fee when we had to clean ourselves. And maybe waive a night's rent or something. But after several hours on hold @vrbo said "it's up to @vacasarentals" even though @vrbo charged us. And @vacasarentals is like nope...
Good news: @ochealth has launched a vastly improved site with stats on COVID-19 in Orange County. Bad news. Three key threshold indicators for meeting California state reopening criteria are clearly not being met. Here's a tour of what's in the new site arcg.is/1veXG90...
There's a lot of data in the new @ochealth coronavirus site like daily test & COVID-19 positivity rates, but you can easily miss because to get to new pages, you have to use small tabs at bottom. These don't show on mobile, not even if you use the mobile version of the site....
Hospitalization and deaths in Orange County are charted. Hospitalizations were before; deaths were not. Helpful if @ochealth added a line for nursing home (SNF) deaths. About 52% now; about 42% a month ago....
As a resident of Orange County, it's a nightmare trying to understand from @OCGovCA and @ochealth if the businesses you might go to are following the (actually still required for some employees) mask order or not. Come along for the mess we have.....
You're probably aware how the mandatory mask order for residents of Orange County was dropped last week. What was never dropped was a required use in essential businesses: ocregister.com/2020/06/15/oc-…
If you go to the main resource for Orange County residents, good luck trying to know when businesses employees are supposed to wear masks. The site lists prominently a "County Health Officer's Orders" section that leads to only one page lacking guidance: occovid19.ochealthinfo.com/article/oc-hea…
