There are two issues at play right now in the #sbc about @SBCExecComm: one centers around our polity and one centers around our theology.
In regard to polity: messengers have spoken and trustees are ignoring them. This is significant and, tbh, we have never seen something like this in the #sbc
The second is theological: at best, we have reason to believe that we have not cared well for sexual abuse survivors. At worst, we have been in the midst of covering abuse up on a massive denominational scale. #sbc
This is why we want a thorough, unbiased, and unabridged investigation of the main actor at play: the EC
I am glad that entities, states, pastors, churches, and a host of messengers are using their voices to speak out on the polity side of the issue. However, we need to speak more to the theological side and realize that we are dealing with reprehensible sin #sbc
Now, I think the messengers recognized the theological side at the last annual meeting. This is why the vote to investigate was overwhelming. But, now, it seems to me that our main concern is the polity side (we didn't get what we want)
I just want us to speak more clearly here: our theology must drive our polity. This means: our seeking of justice in this investigation must center around loving our neighbors and treating them in being image-bearers.
Our seeking of justice in this investigation must not now center on the messengers getting what they voted for... This is still not a fight about polity...it is a fight about theology. Again, our theology drives the polity. Let's just care about people more than our polity.
Now, I do think that our polity is right in asking for this investigation and, in the end, I think that it will result in a comprehensive investigation. But that is the main goal: the investigation into the sin. The main goal is not getting the messengers' wishes. #sbc
It is just that we need BOTH the fight for our polity in order to insure that we investigate the issues. This is the only way to honor the theological principles to care for one another and treat people the way they should. #sbc

A thread, for the benefit of all #sbc members who are concerned about the .@SBCExecComm's potential response to the Task Force's recommendations to waive privilege. I thought that it would be good to post our actual bylaws since they are being used as a point of contention (1)
I think that by clearly looking at our bylaws we can have a better understanding of what our role is next week. I also do not see by looking at these bylaws, one can make a case that the members of the EC have any standing to ignore the will of the messengers (2)
