Thank you @OwlLabs for collaborating with us… in March 2020 I emailed them asking if they’d be willing to donate an owl to help us with virtual rounding with parents of kids in the #PedsCICU they replied in <2 mins with “how many can we send”? resources.owllabs.com/case-studies/d…

/ you see, I had been a family member at @DukeHealth when my mom was inpatient for 8mos in 2019 after a failed bone marrow transplant. Attending rounds to get all the information while working full time was 😵💫. So I (a medical professional) often felt confused about the plan
/ Here we are at Lion King the year before in 2018
/ Anyway, navigating your own healthcare system for a loved one has a way of 🔨 some perspective into your head… and it felt really hard to manage my mom’s care when I couldn’t be part of rounds daily
/ my sweet mama passed away in July 2019 after receiving the most kind, wonderful care on 9200 at @DukeHospital 💜
/ fast forward to teaching some students at @DukeU_NrsngSchl in the #ACPNP program with @dukeacpnp (who was also my chair for my DNP project) and one student had to “zoom” in a simulation on an iPad (which actually deserves a Twitter thread of its own)
/ and I had an idea 💡💡💡— I wish it would’ve been that easy to join rounds for my mom when she was inpatient… 🙇🏻♀️ wonder if we can do that in the #PedsCICU at @Duke_Childrens … this was October 2019.
/ @DukeITSO helped me with all the legal and privacy requirements. And when #Covid_19 started changing visitation rules— we were poised for action thanks to an amazing multidisciplinary collab in the hospital of people who wanted to fight to preserve #familycenteredcare
/ so our team started enrolling families and then realized we needed something that could handle the muffled voices of #universalmasking 😷😷 but still give them Audio/Visual experience as if they were there (enter @OwlLabs )
/ we have since moved to an iPad system that @DukeHealth invested in but still use our beloved 🦉🦉🦉 to help us connect with each other and the families of our patients every day.
/ My greatest lesson?
Lead with kindness and understanding. Walk around in someone else’s shoes (or your own in my case) and when you’re ready, digest how you can learn from your experience to make just a little something better for the next person.
/ I’m so proud to share that @DukeHeartCenter PCICU and step down regularly virtual round with parents and even offer virtual visitation, PT/OT/Speech education… how do you engage with families?
