My mother - bless her soul - was pushed into a cattle car in March 1942, with 1K other girls from Eastern Slovakia, all aged 16-20. She arrived in Auschwitz Birkenau and survived until the Death March of January 1945, which she survived as well.

2) She married my dad in Prague in December 1949 and later underwent a series of operations which left her unable to bend her left leg. A few more years of heavy Communist persecution followed. Despite everything, she passed at 96 last year, leaving one son, two granddaughters
3) and three great grandchildren. She had managed to carve out a good life for herself. Why am I writing about it now? Because things are bleak and we humans tend to think that what is bleak now will be that way forever. Imagine my mother's thoughts when she arrived in Auschwitz
4) and witnessed mass murder, gassings, starvation and human misery of indescribable proportions. And yet: she survived the nightmare and she thrived. The current crop of criminals in our leadership will also disappear from the world. Take heart. ALL THINGS MUST PASS
