More GE19 Nerd analysis. A short thread about representation:
Under our corrupt, undemocratic electoral system for HoC MPs, only 9 can possibly claim a true mandate to represent their constituency.
7 @UKLabour & 2 @Conservatives MPs received the votes of >50% of the registered electorate in their respective constituencies.
The 2 Tories are Mark Francois (50.5%) & John Whittingdale (50.1%). Neither, currently holds a ministerial post so, is not at he heart of our gov’t.
2/6
None of the PM, Chancellor, Secretaries of State, Ministers, junior Ministers holds a mandate from their constituency electorate.
Francois is the Chair of the ERG so does wield some power in influencing the gov’t.
3/6
How can we have only 2 MPs in the party of gov’t with >50% of the votes of their constituency electorate (9 MPs in total in HoC) & call the UK a democracy.
Clearly FPTP is undemocratic at constituency level,
4/6
and at a national level, as the current gov’t with an 80 seat majority only has the votes of 29.4% of the registered electorate.
We need an electoral system that produces a representative HoC and gov’t to be a democracy.
Only 1 gov’t has been elected with >50% of the popular vote in the last 100 years.
How would #ProportionalRepresentation have changed GEs in last 100 years??
In the 100 years from 01/01/1921 to 31/12/2020, Tories have been in power for 62.6% of the time & Labour for 37.4%.

I have redistributed MPs on a popular vote, proportional basis for all GE in the last 100 years.
[DM email address for Excel spreadsheet.]
Only 1931 election gives in a clear majority for 1 party: Tories = 63 seat maj. (not really valid as the campaign was for a GNU).
2/11
GE1935 was also based on a campaign for a GNU which would give a Tory led coalition gov’t.
All other elections no single party gains a majority.
