Lets call out the hypocrisy and relentless inteference in West Africa's affairs. During the August 2020 Coup in Mali former President Goodluck Jonathan was appointed by ECOWAS as a special envoy to head its mediation mission in Mali. When talks failed and sanctions were
.imposed Emmanual Macron condemned ECOWAS's "hasty" decision, stating democracy can wait, the stability of the nation should be of paramount importance
When Chadian strongman Idris Derby was assasinated, the Chadian military appointed his son as President,
..enraging Chads parliament and the African Union. Thousands of Chadians took to the streets in protest, 22 protesters were gunned down by the army. The African Union condemned the killing of pro democracy protesters and unconstitutional power grab.
Emmanual Macron said ..to quote verbatim
QUOTE
Democracy can wait. The stability of Chad is of our immediate concern. France will not tolerate any threat to Chad.
END QUOTE.
When Asimi Goita carried out another coup de etat in Mali in 2021 and ECOWAS threatened to expel Mali from the regional bloc, again Macron called ECOWAS threats hasty saying time was needed to organize a smooth transition of power.
Asimi Goiya goes rogue and pivots to Russia for military assistance. Suddenly the same Macron now publicly questions the legitimacy of the Malian government overseeing a transition to elections and threatens Asimi Goita not to derail the democratic process in Mali.
France that has accommodated military juntas elsewhere in West Africa has turned a sharp corner. Suddenly democracy can no longer wait.
Enter Guinea.
Months after Colonel Mamady Doumbouya seized power in Guinea, France is still curiously maintained radio silence. Heres why.
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya is a Corporal in the French army yet a General in the Guinean army. His wife is French. He has a French passport. The leader of Guinea is a French citizen, and a Corporal in the French army. The First Lady of Guinea is French.
His loyalty is with France not Guinea. He will likely never step down. The perpetuation of France's colonial relationship with Africa by subtle means continues unabated.
It will be fool hardy to ignore French activities in West Africa thinking its none of Nigeria's business.
France’s speedy accommodation and support of military strongmen is bound to inspire other wannabes in Francophone Africa. Doumbouya was among those paying close attention. Doumbouta and Mali’s Assimi Goita both participated in a 2019 French led military exercise in Burkina Faso
Funny enough, when Alpha Conde illegally carried out a constitutional amendment to allow himself a third term, the French leader blasted him for this power grab, Alpha Conde naively reckoned forgiveness would follow. After all, Macron had no qualms about congratulating the
Ivory Coast’s Alassane Ouattara for having secured a third term with the help of some constitutional jiggery pokery. Instead a Corporal in the French army outsed him in a bloodless coup. Go figure.
France wants to be a global power and francophone West Africa
has provided him with opportunities to furnish his international stature. This explains why Macron was leery of antagonizing the new rulers of Mali, Chad and now Guinea. But we are playing with fire here and Nigeria cannot afford to play a passive role.
But by handing out yet another free pass to a military strongman, Macron is in effect inviting others to take advantage of his weak hand. This means several other leaders in francophone West Africa region will now be looking nervously over their shoulders. A coup is imminent.
The democratic retrenchment in francophone West Africa is at the very least an embarrassment of ECOWAS..

In early January 1987, Chadian president Hissene Habres troops seized the Libyan held town of Fada in northern Chad. Remember Habres? ..(the Chadian strongman who invaded and occupied Nigerian islands in Lake Chad but paid a terrible price for his misadventure.
In retaliation, Libyan fighter jets crossed the red line to hit Oum Chalouba and Arada. A few bombs struck French forces. Rather than respond in kind as was expected, French fighters began carrying out patrols near the 16th parallel.
Paris had something bigger in mind. In retaliation for Libya crossing of the red line and bombing French troops, the French planned to attack a Libyan base either Maaten Al Sahra, Aouzou or Ouadi Doum. They knew the Libyans were expecting reprisal raids and had rushed to
Watching revelations from the Pandora Paper that focuses squarely on African leaders. One wonders why no one is shedding light on illegal weapons fueling conflicts across the continent. How many times have certain powers "mistakenly" handed over weapons to terrorist groups.
In Syria NATO airdropped weapons directly into the hands of ISIS. They said it was a mistake. The powers that be are illegally sell arms to fragile states they know will soon collapse, and when they collapse the region is flooded with weapons that fuel wars and suffering.
International Arms Treaty have failed to stop the illegal flow of weapons underground. Countries that need weapons are blindsided by human rights accusations, while militants group have easier access to arms without the bottlenecks that characterise western arms procurement.
The Rise and Fall and Rise again of the Nigerian Navy.
The 1970s and 1980s saw a major expansion of the Nigerian navy’s surface fleet. By 1981, the Nigerian Navy was a potent force with a German designed MEKO 360H class guided missile frigate, NNS Aradu spearheading a fleet that included a smaller, older frigate,
NNS Obuma, four corvettes of the Dorina and Erin’mi classes and six missile boats, three Ekpe class of German design and three Siri class of French design. In addition to there was a capable force of minesweepers and hard a robust anti-submarine warfare capability.
There comes a time when strategic patience and tolerance becomes a national security threat.
When will Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi be called for questioning? Is he bigger than the Nigerian state?
Its one thing to play devils advocate and get away with it but deliberately trying to jeopardize a large scale military exercise is a step too far.
Just three days ago he urged the Nigerian military to stop killing bandits that are abducting schoolchildren and killing Nigerians. He said they should rather be respected and accorded human rights.
It is the largest military exercise ever conducted by any military in Sub Sahara Africa: Exercise Golden Dawn, Enduring Peace and Still Waters is mustering thousands of troops, 70 warships, dozens of aircafts, tanks, Special Forces Personnel etc
This reflects a paradigme shift in Nigeria's defence posture and the growing might of the Nigerian armed forces. Nigeria is caught between playing down the scale of its exercises, for diplomatic reasons, and embellishing them, to awe its enemies.
The aim is to provide a complex environment in which the joint arm of the Nigerian military can train together, honing tactics and skills in preparation for future eventualities.
Military personnel will be put through a range of realistic, simulated scenarios including crisis
Rwanda has a kick ass army and they showcased it in their intervention in Mozambique. Fresh from capturing a strategic northern Mozambican port held by terrorists for a year they pursuing the insurgents into sorrounding areas.
Rwandan forces drove out Islamist militants in Mozambique's gas-rich Cabo Delgado province within days. What Mozambique couldn't do in a year.
On August 9, the Rwandan military took the strategically important northern Mozambican port of Mocimboa da Praia from militants
The jihadis had occupied the port for over a year but fled towards Tanzania on motorcycles as Rwandan forces approached. Others melted away into the thick forests south of Mocimboa. Around 70 militants were killed.
