Nigeria underscored the need for a common front to respond to the threat posed by the non-regulation of conventional weapons. To mitigate arms proliferation, Nigeria doubled its efforts to strengthen border controls & cooperation across the West African sub-region.
Experiencing the negative impact of the unregulated trade of conventional weapons, Jamaica continues to be commitment to regional & int’l efforts such as the #ArmsTreaty; also shared nat'l efforts to strengthen legislative framework in order to better address illicit arms trade.
As the new #ArmsTreaty President, @GermanyUN announced that the focus of #CSP8 will be on taking stock of progress & challenges to Treaty universalization and implementation. (1/2)
In their statement, @ColombiaONU emphasized the humanitarian and socioeconomic consequences of the illicit trade of #SALW and its ammunition. It stressed the importance of the #UNPoA in addressing this issue, and hoped that the #BMS7 final document strengthens PoA implementation.
Noting the importance of not losing sight of the threat brought about by conventional weapons, @MOFAkr_eng noted the significant achievement of the #ArmsTreaty to foster the regulation of the global arms trade.
.@UKRinUN emphasized the destabilizing effects of irresponsible arms transfers to its territory, to European security and to the arms control architecture as a whole. It reiterated its full support to the #UNPoA.
In their statement, Eritrea emphasized that conventional weapons, more than any type of weaponry, continues to claim lives & destroys economic progress. #SALW possession by non-state actors requires regional and international solutions, and meaningful cooperation.
🔎 🌍 Ukraine and Andorra are the only two #ArmsTreaty signatory states from Europe. Eritrea remains one of 14 African states that have yet to join the Treaty. #UNGA#FirstCommittee
Concerned with the increasing expenditure on arms & ammunition, @CancilleriaCR reiterated that robust and effective regulations of arms transfers, and enhanced synergies w/ all arms control instruments are critical to the protection of civilians. (1/2) #FirstCommittee

Presenting on behalf of the coalition, @csolmirano contextualizes the situation in the region where violence is fuelled by the illicit proliferation of arms and contributes significantly to negative indicators of social well-being, and lower degrees of institutional capacity.
⚤ On #GBV: While firearms are used in one-third of all femicides globally, in some Latin American and Caribbean countries, including El Salvador, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras, firearms are used in more than 60% of all femicides.

In her statement @UNODA’s @INakamitsu noted that a critical piece of the disarmament puzzle is the effective control of convention arms including efforts to mitigate and address its humanitarian impact, and excessive accumulation and illicit trade. #ReduceHumanSuffering
