Talking about birth rates can be tricky, b/c conservatives use the topic for either misogynistic or racist ends. That said, as a society, people who *want* to have children should be able to do so. At this moment, many face disincentives. Seems like we should work on fixing those
Many people who want to have children put it off bc they simply can't afford to. Parents-primarily women-have to make wrenching decisions about their careers vs children bc childcare is so exorbitantly expensive. That's upper/middle class folks. Much worse for lower income folks
I fail to see how, "The government will support childcare for this woman as she works 40 hours a week & makes 40,000 or less a year" is an "entitlement mentality."
Back to birth rates--stay with me here for a second--coz I'm NOT about to go all Handmaid's Tale on you. We want people to be able to have kids if THEY want to do so. Having a younger generation means that generation works & pays taxes that will. . .support the older generation
So anyone who is concerned about the future economic strength of our society--including Social Security--the most popular "entitlement" of all--should take a good hard look at what we can do to support people who WANT to have children, but can't b/c it's too damn expensive.
This seems like a real problem. Both b/c it's denying Americans opportunity & freedom & because we're risking a lopsided population, such that, in 40 years, we might not have enough young people to pay the taxes we need. I wonder if there's any way we can address it. . . . .

I just read Bad Art Friend & I don't have any desire to comment on the specifics of the story or to defend/criticize either woman. However, I have seen some comments arguing kidney donors shouldn't brag about their donations & PLEASE don't let that be the message you take away
Again, I don't really care about this story. I care about KIDNEYS. Our country uses diseased donors & living donors, the latter being moved by altruism. We need MORE people to give their kidneys. A major way to get more people to give is for them to talk about their donation.
Sometimes we might find this irritating! "They only gave a kidney so they could feel good about themselves." Well, "kidney donation will make you feel good about yourself" is one way to get people to donate.

It’s illogical to use perceived grammatical rules to argue against treating people w/ dignity, so these arguments should be immediately rejected. It’s interesting, tho, that when people do this, they always reveal a deep ignorance of not just English, but language more generally. Image
Pronoun systems are not some pristine grammatical mapping of referents. Otherwise, all languages would perfectly delineate between person, plurality, animacy, humanness, etc. Most systems—including English!—have quirks & gaps that speakers easily resolve.
-English does not distinguish between sing/plural in 2nd person: (You). Some dialects have filled this gap w/ y’all, yins, etc
-Varietes of Spanish use 3rd person (usted(es)) for 2nd person.
-In spoken French, 3rd person sing is indistinguishable from 3rd person plural (Il/Ils)

I think we should be cautious when comparing other protest strategies to those of the Civil Rights Movement. The MLK division specifically chose non-aggression as a tactic. They chose to show what would happen to Black people if they just lived in the world: they would be beaten.
This doesn't mean other forms of modern protest--including aggressive ones--are wrong. It's just to say that the tactical strategy of the MLK Civil Rights Movement specifically called for people to put their bodies in the way of violence for just engaging in regular everyday acts
We can debate other modern protest strategies--but they're all still fundamentally different than what was asked of Black activists & citizens in the 1960s. Their tactical task was to subject themselves to state violence in order to show the world what it meant to exist as Black

For @damemagazine, I interviewed people in journalism/media criticism about how the press covers different current events, from Afghanistan, to covid, to climate change, & the insurrection. Here are a few quotes that are salient this week. . . . damemagazine.com/2021/09/27/wha…
Greg Sargent, on attacks on American democracy: "This gets to the essence of one of the big problems here. That flagrantly anti-democratic combat is sometimes treated as sort of partisan warfare as usual. And it really isn’t that. . . ." damemagazine.com/2021/09/27/wha…
Sargent, continued: ". . . I think a lot of Americans are really being treated to a kind of mode of coverage that obscures this very profound imbalance between the two parties on really the fundamentals of democracy." damemagazine.com/2021/09/27/wha…

We need to have a real conversation about scientific gatekeeping in the COVID era. reuters.com/article/factch…
There are a lot of issues here. First, the pre-print crisis, in which the results of non-peer reviewed studies are widely circulated & sometimes manipulated by bad faith actors. General scientific illiteracy in the public. Also scientific illiteracy in journalism.
Peer-review often results in *a lot* of changes. If a study goes to revise-and-resubmit, the revisions typically tend in the direction of *weakening* the paper's claims. Reviewers demand greater statistical transparency. They also ask for greater stipulation of limitations, etc.

Hillary Clinton said she was personally progressive & publicly more moderate. Many accused her of being disingenuous. But this balance is true of most of our modern major Dem leaders, including Biden. A failure to understand this has led to poor analyses of Biden's agenda.
The Dem party is ideologically diverse. There is the far left edge--AOC, Sanders, Warren--& the moderate edge--Manchin & Sinema. Then there are those who operate in the Center Left. Many of these politicians are quite progressive but move in line w/ what is politically possible
Most of our leaders--B. Clinton, Obama, Pelosi, & Biden--fit this mold to some extent. They identify where the country is & where the party is & where there is a space to move a bit left. This is typical for leaders, given they have to represent more than one ideological faction.
