NEW: Since July, twice as many children have died of COVID-19 as during the prior 16 months combined. All were unvaccinated or ineligible for the jab.

But kids ages 5-11 may soon be eligible; Today, Pfizer asked the FDA approve the vaccine for ages 5-11.mississippifreepress.org/16765/pfizer-a…
“With new cases in the U.S. continuing to be at a high level, this submission is an important step in our ongoing effort against #COVID19," Pfizer said today.

Among Mississippi children between the ages of 12 and 15 who are eligible for vaccination already, 30% are now fully vaccinated along with 34% of those between the ages of 16 and 17.

45% of Mississippians of all ages are fully vaccinated.

“The safety profile and immunogenicity data in children aged 5 to 11 years vaccinated at a lower dose are consistent with those we have observed with our vaccine in other older populations at a higher dose,” said Dr. Ugur Sahin, the co-founder of BioNTech.mississippifreepress.org/16765/pfizer-a…

Clarification: Twice as many children have died since late July *IN MISSISSIPPI* as during the prior 16 months of the pandemic combined (we're a Mississippi outlet, of course).

I do not think it is that high nationwide.
It's good that kids 5-11 may soon be able to get vaccinated.

But that still leaves out children under 5—like a child btwn 1-4 who died of COVID in Mississippi in August and a baby who died in September.

Their health depends on others getting vaccinated.

WLOX TV anchor Meggan Gray has lost her job after refusing to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Her employer declined her offer to get tested weekly for COVID, @CAnitaLee1 reports.

FYI: WLOX is owned by Gray Television, whose CEO is a major Trump & GOP donor.

Other Gray Television anchors across the country have quit or lost their jobs over Gray Television's vaccine mandates in recent weeks, too.

In Nebraska, KSNB meteorgologist Tim Jones: adweek.com/tvspy/nebraska…
In Missouri, Gray Television fired KY3 reporter Linda Simmons for refusing to get vaccinated for COVID-19.

As @jallen1985 points out, this article is incorrect in asserting that @tatereeves has embraced natural herd immunity as a COVID solution.

A more accurate way to describe Gov. Reeves' approach to the pandemic since vaccines became available is "every man/woman/child/school district for themselves!"

Essentially: Get vaccinated, don't get COVID, if you do, don't blame the gov; blame yourself.
mississippifreepress.org/15063/gov-reev…
The result of the governor passing the buck & centering "personal responsibility," though, has been a shirking of social responsibility resulting in hospital failures & many, many more avoidable deaths (not to mention more permanent health issues).

The statement "racism is physically built into some of our highways" is an incontrovertible fact, albeit the kind of fact that powerful, wealthy white men love to deny.

Anyway, here's a link: npr.org/2021/04/07/984… screenshot of headline: &qu...
It's important to remember that wealthy white folks (especially heirs to white wealth) have a vested interest in playing the "hear no evil, see no evil" card here: Systemic racism helped build white wealth and entitlement.

Even acknowledging systemic racism is a threat.
It's not just the highway system or Rep. Palazzo, though.

Systemic racism built Mississippi. Gov. Tate Reeves says it doesn't exist.

NEW: Overturning Roe v. Wade will "empower" women to pursue careers and raise children, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch says. She says times have changed.

But there are a lot of reasons to think that's... not exactly true. So here's a thread. 1/

AG Fitch's claim about ending Roe v. Wade: “Think about...the babies that will be saved, the mothers that will get the chance to really redirect their lives. You have the option to achieve your dream goals and have those beautiful children as well.” 2/

Fitch claims changes since 1973 make Roe and abortion no longer necessary for women. She cites laws "addressing pregnancy discrimination, requiring leave time, (and) assisting with child care" as allowing women to pursue careers and "rich family lives." 3/

Not only did Chuck Todd let Meghan McCain tell a lie on air without correcting her, but @MeetThePress then tweeted the lie as fact with no fact check. So here's a fact check:

Oh, the ways I love Kacey Musgraves:

🎵And my mama cried
When she realized
I ain't pageant material
I'm always higher than my hair
And it ain't that I don't care about world peace
But I don't see how I can fix it in a swimsuit on a stage 🎵
I mean, this woman knows southern society:

🎶Oh, I bet you think you're John Wayne
Showing up and shooting down everybody
You're classic in the wrong way
And we all know that you know the story 🎶
I mean, does she not?!

🎶If you ain't got two kids by 21
You're probably gonna die alone
At least that's what tradition told you
And it don't matter if you don't believe
Come Sunday mornin', you best be there
In the front row like you're supposed to 🎶
