I worked for @podcastnotes for 2 years.

During that time, I summarized 500+ podcasts.

Here are 10 tips to become a more effective & efficient podcast listener:
1) Sample Before Committing

Before committing 2+ hours to a podcast, take 30 seconds to read the timestamps.

They'll give you a roadmap of what topics will be covered & what you can expect to learn.

You can also use the timestamps to skip over parts that don't interest you.
2) Up The Speed

99% of podcasts can be listened to at 1.25 or 1.5x speed without any decrease in listening pleasure.

Even the best speakers use filler words & speak slowly because they need time to think about their answers.

A 2hr podcast at 1.5x speed will save you 40 mins!
3) Take Notes To Remember More

If you're listening for pure entertainment, don't take notes.

But if you want to improve your life & apply the lessons learned, you need to take notes.

Whenever you hear something important or actionable, jot it down in your own words.
Pro Tip:

Use the Notes, Evernote, or the Notion app to take notes while listening to a podcast.

You can sync any of those apps between your phone & laptop so you can take notes on either device and have access to your notes on both devices.
4) Take Advantage Of The Show Notes

Many podcasters (ex: @tferriss) create show notes for each episode that have links to everything mentioned in the show.

Instead of spending time searching for resources mentioned in the podcast, just read the show notes to find what you need.
5) Use Podcasts To Make Boring Tasks Fun

The best thing about podcasts is that you can listen to them while multi-tasking.

Listen while:

• Stuck in traffic
• Cleaning the house
• Commuting to work

If you have to do a boring task, listen to a podcast to make it more fun.
6) In A Rush? Read The Transcript

The average listening speed is 135 wpm.

The average reading speed is 300 wpm.

So even if you listen to a podcast at 2x speed, you'll still get through it faster by reading the transcript.

Plus it's easier to take notes with a transcript.
7) Find A Podcast Host You Love

Every podcast host has a unique vibe & will steer the podcast in a different direction.

A guest on one podcast will be more technical while that same guest on another podcast will likely be more entertaining.

Choose your host accordingly.
8) Highlight The Most Important Lessons

After listening to a pod, review your notes & move the most important lessons to the top.

That way whenever you refer back to them, you'll see the most important lessons first.

Reviewing your notes also helps you remember more of them.
9) Listen Once Benefit Twice

Don't let your notes sit on your computer & collect digital dust.

Benefit twice by sharing your notes with others.

Turn your notes into a Twitter thread, blog post, LinkedIn article, email newsletter, or another piece of content.
10) Nothing Matters Without Action

It doesn't matter if you listen to 5 or 500 podcasts if you never apply what you learned.

If a guest recommends a book, supplement, or habit, give it a try.

Don't just listen, go and leverage what you've learned to improve your life.

10 of the most important visuals from "Atomic Habits" by @JamesClear:

(thread) 🧵
1) 1% Better Every Day

If you get 1% better every day for one year, you won't become 10x better...

You'll become 37x better.

Small improvements compound over time and lead to huge results.
2) The Plateau of Latent Potential

Progress is not always linear. Our results are often delayed.

The "valley of disappointment" is the period where we feel discouraged after putting in lots of work without experiencing results.

But this work is not wasted, it's being stored.
