As much as I agree with Biden's foreign and national security policies (the alternative is a literal terrorist network that set up Afghanistan to fail & freed 5k Taliban fighters for no reason), the US & KSA are backing the good guys in Yemen. You know, the lawful government.
In a place like Yemen, we in the international community don't have the option of sitting back and letting Iran's minions fully take over the country. (1) Humanitarian reasons, (2) They want to hold us to ransom by controlling the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Easy decision for me.
Most in the English speaking media repeat the lie that the aggressors in Yemen are the KSA, UAE, and US. This lie began on Al Jazeera, which is owned by the Qatari regime, which supports the Iranian view of the region.

Think the Evergiven ship episode was bad? That's nothing...
Regardless of who is in the White House in the US, every country in the world is affected by what happens in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It's always been that way, and it is a central issue in WWI, WWII, the Cold War, and since. Not only because of oil.
There are "great powers" as there always was. These countries have enough economic & thus military resource to be the decision makers, & the rest of us are reliant on them to maintain a rule-based international order. US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, China & arguably some others.
The great powers are the 5 veto-power countries of the UN Security Council, plus a few other countries like (the relatively recently united) Germany that have amassed power and influence since 1945. You could toss in Japan, India, Brazil, Australia, for example.
Any country that borders the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, or the approaches to them, is capable of blocking the shipping on which we all depend. Countries like Egypt, KSA, Sudan, Yemen, Eritrea, Somalia, and Djibouti.

All of the great powers have interests in these countries.
The pandemic has been a useful reminder that our individual choices do impact others, whether we realize it or not.

Isolationism and anti-vaxxer ideology are >100 years old and they are part of far right fascism.
Isolationism & anti-vaxxer ideology used to be fringe movements in the US. Bad actors have always tried to use one or other ideology for political ends.

Finally, they managed to get traction on not just one, but two. The Russian & Chinese regimes are laughing their asses off.
Right now the US is under as much threat as it was in WWII. It's very important that policies like support for the government in Yemen via KSA and the UAE are not changed. During WWII we had tolerate some strange bedfellows. In 2021 it's the same.
Russia and China are run by fascists (from the far right and far left, respectively.)

The Republican party's actions and omissions throughout 2021 so far have shown how fascist they now are.

They must be kept out of power unless and until they rejoin the rules based world.

It's easy af to hate the FBI.gov. Both sides do it.

Any LE agency makes mistakes & is vulnerable to corruption & mismanagement. They have >30,000 employees. I demand accountability while being grateful for all the carnage they prevent, that we never hear about.
I've followed closely the performance of Christopher Wray since his nomination for FBI Director.

IMO it's time for him to go. His response to the agency's mistakes & alleged biases has been weak, at best.

Surely there is someone in the US better qualified for the job?
Most of the FBI's work is successful and saves lives. Some of it is appallingly incompetent. The challenge is to address the failures while keeping the body as a whole functioning at at least it's current level.

New leadership would be a fresh start for the agency.

Thread: The public comments by Cassie Laundrie about her brother Brian Laundrie who is (likely) still on the run and widely suspected to have murdered Gabby Petito.

Cassie said things in the impromptu conversation with protesters & a TV interview.

Many are following this story and yes there are plenty of similar cases that get ignored but: I don't see the harm in following this one, at least until we find out if Brian Laundrie (BL) is alive and in custody, or otherwise.

It's a good way to raise domestic abuse awareness.
BL's sister Cassie has gone on the record now, to clear up some misconceptions. I think she did the right thing. As a DV survivor, I know some of what Gabby experienced in the days before her death. The gaslighting, manipulation, guilt, fear, shame etc.

That is a great image. The similarities between early Hitler-in-office and late Trump-in-office become clearer all the time.

He denied those who had to secure the Capitol on 1/6 that kind of protective riot gear, and he knew it. 140 injured cops; unforgivable.
And yes, Trump had a duty to make sure the usual federal security contributions AROUND the perimeter of the Capitol were there. He knowingly "let it happen on purpose" (LIHOP).

Hitler replaced one "security" branch, the Sturmabteilung (SA) with another, the Schutzstaffel (SS).
Compare TFG's actions & omissions in response to the summer 2020 BLM protests that in places became riots with his actions & omissions before& on 1/6.

Not just rank hypocrisy. Aiding & abetting domestic terrorism. (#StandBackAndStandBy 1 yr ago today!)

We're not "transitioning to a decarbonized society" anytime soon. We can't.

Nuclear power for this purpose is far safer and cheaper than fossil fuel and most other sources. Failing that, smart hydroelectric power can provide for the world's aluminum smelting needs.

Also...
This:

"[M]assive electrical currents to melt alumina, essentially the same substance that sapphires are made from"

is a ridiculously OTT way to express this information.

Diamonds are made of carbon, and so are humans...
You can tell a story was aimed at your emotion, not intellect, when it includes truly daft phrases like that.

Before speaking about the substances that are made from bauxite ore, folk should learn a bit about it. This is a quick read:

Time for a quick thread about the meaning behind every little part of my current Twitter profile that communicates a value that is important to me.

In around April 2020 I changed my username from @GodlessNZ to @FreedomFriesInc.

This account was originally set up to participate in secularism discussions. From Feb 2016 it morphed into 95% US politics. A topic I love to follow.
#FreedomFries pops up in the news from time to time and is still largely misunderstood in the US.

In 2003 it was a joke "trend" or "meme" among those who supported the US-led coalition to topple Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

I supported it and still do.

Thread: The substance of what Clarence Thomas is doing here is an abuse of his power that aims to further undermine public confidence in institutions, especially in the free press as an institution.

He knows exactly what he's doing. And it is toxic to democracy.
How dare Clarence Thomas try to attack the free press as an institution.

This is an active attempt at suppressing a free press and free speech that criticize his decisions.

Absolutely vital for the public to debate SCOTUS decisions whenever we we want to.
Thomas pretends to just be woefully out of touch with life outside his elitist bubble but he knows exactly what he's doing.

The far right fascist part of America that made him their favorite SCOTUS judge after Scalia died, have damaged public trust in institutions the most.
