The brutality of Indian boarding schools is a stain on our country's conscience—and a history that far too few non-Native Americans know. It's time to learn it and reckon with it. If this is unfamiliar to you, here are some links to start with: 1/
This two-part story from 2008 by @NPR lifts up the voices of some survivors of a program founded on the principle of, as its founder put it, "all the Indian there is in the race should be dead. Kill the Indian in him, and save the man."
At least ten of these boarding schools, founded in the last 19th century and operating for decades, were in Wisconsin. One after another, these schools sought to destroy any vestige of tribal culture. jsonline.com/story/news/202…
At St. Joseph's Indian Industrial School on the Menominee reservation, "The students were punished if they spoke their native language, some survivors told Shillinger. One told Shillinger that school workers would put kerosene shampoo or soap in their mouth if they were caught."
My godmother Ada Deer, former chair of the Menominee nation, never learned the Menominee language—because her father had been so traumatized at an Indian boarding school that he never spoke it again. The scars from that experience haunted his entire life.
The abuse rampant at Indian boarding schools was not limited to the official program of cultural termination. It included physical, sexual, and mental abuse of children, who had regularly been forcibly removed from their families.
Canada ran a similar program. This summer, Canada has been reeling at the discovery of at least 1300 unmarked graves of children at former boarding school sites. scientificamerican.com/article/canada…
In 2018, hundreds of thousands of Americans marched, rightfully, in protest of the Trump policy of forcible family separation. In my w @MoveOn, I was lucky to work with the Families Belong Together coalition to plan those protests—and ensure this history was lifted up too.
It is only by being honest about our history that we can learn what we're capable of—and find ways to organize against the recurrence of past horrors. There are those who now seek to erase the teaching of honest history. But only reckoning brings resolve.
Once you start looking, you'll find a wealth to read and learn. Here's one survivor's account that weaves in the broader story. smile.amazon.com/Children-Left-…

On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we celebrate and honor the history, resilience, and culture of indigenous peoples across our country and in Wisconsin. We also uplift the Native vote—which played a key role in putting President Biden in the White House. 1/
Native Americans make up 1.5% of WI’s voting population. Biden won by just 20,682 votes—a 0.6% margin of victory. A rigorous statewide analysis by the Oneida Nation estimated that 82% of Wisconsin’s Native people voted for Joe Biden.
Menominee County—home of the Menominee Nation—perfectly illustrates the point. It was the state’s most-Democratic county: 82% of voters went for Biden-Harris. Per the census, 82% of the county is Native. madison.com/ct/opinion/col…
The Wisconsin GOP legislature used taxpayer funds to hire an ultra-partisan former state Supreme Court Justice to "investigate" 2020's election. Today, he said he doesn't understand how elections work.
If your new mechanic is raising up your car on the lift for an inspection and casually mentions that he doesn’t have a comprehensive understanding—or even any understanding—of how cars work, get your car out of there as fast as possible.
If you’re about to be put under anesthesia and the surgeon says she doesn’t want understand how hearts work, find a way to get out of the operating room.

Wisconsin is the closest state in the country. 4 of the last 6 presidential elections have come down to less than 1%. And it isn’t just close—it’s decisive. Wisconsin was the “tipping point” state in both 2016 & 2020. Win Wisconsin, you win the presidency. nationalreview.com/2020/12/wiscon…
That’s why Wisconsin’s governorship is one of the most critical jobs in American politics. Re-elect a champion of democracy like @Tony4WI and we have a fighting chance to win in 2024. But if Kleefisch gets in, she’s promised to sign drastic restrictions on voting.

THREAD: Rebecca Kleefisch is running to be the GOP’s nominee for governor against @GovEvers. She says a lot. The problem? You can’t believe what she says. Her record of dishonesty makes clear that you can’t trust #RadicalRebecca. For example…
Kleefisch’s campaign launch video starts with images of fires in Kenosha a year ago. No, she’s not calling out the vigilante teen who killed two people. She’s pushing a debunked, divisive right-wing storyline—that ignores Gov Evers’ swift response: politifact.com/factchecks/202…
And while Kleefisch has been one of the worst offenders of using Kenosha to provoke conflict, her *initial* response to the shooting of Jacob Blake actually echoed Gov Evers’ comments. Now, she’s changing her position to fit her new radical agenda.
