We have written to @GregHuntMP on the recent recommendation from ATAGI about the need for a booster COVID-19 vaccination shot in individuals who are severely immunocompromised. We have noted with disappointment that people with Down syndrome have not been included in this advice.
Adults with Down syndrome are at increased risk for more severe outcomes following infection with COVID-19. There is also evidence that adults with Down syndrome are at higher risk of breakthrough infection (after vaccination) and severe outcomes.
As people with Down syndrome were prioritised in the initial roll-out, some will be soon hitting 6 months since their initial vaccination. Research shows that the Pfizer vaccine effectiveness begins to drop after 6 months.
With lockdown restrictions easing across Australia, DSA is extremely concerned about the potential risk to the Down syndrome community if they are not offered the opportunity to access a booster vaccination.
We will keep our community updated with any changes to these recommendations as they are announced, and will continue to advocate for the prioritisation of people with Down syndrome in the vaccination rollout.
