It is with immense sadness that I write that Jess Garcia (aged 36) @hatethejess is no more 😥. In my MJFam circle, she played the role of a protective big sister for me . In her honour, let me tell you some of the things that she did since I got to know her.
Jess was one of the most active MJ advocates I've ever seen. She had a will of iron and worked on so many projects, getting no recognition for most of what she did but it didn't matter to her.
Her involvement in Square One as well as Square One 2.0 as the marketing director is known. For the first release, she along with Shania handled coordinating the immense amount of messages and submissions for subtitles. For 2.0 and the Amazon release she did even more
Apart from that, she combed through podcasts and would reach out to people privately who leaned towards MJ=Guilty or otherwise unsure and without shaming them, would get to know them and sometimes built friendships.
For example, the incredible hosts of the @KnockedCon got to know her and she also introduced Taj to them. Both of them appeared on an episode together. That episode is a must listen. Jess is so witty in it..
I know at least 3 other MJ related projects she was involved in that I don't want to make public and those are only the things that I know of!
Apart from all of that, Jess was also in touch with @BringRodneyHome regarding the Rodney Reed case. She was so passionate about the injustice that this man faced and still faces. She stayed in contact with Rodney Reed and with his family and supported them in her own way.
That's so typical of Jess. She would get into contact privately with the people who were affected and do her best to help in whatever way she could without regard for her time.
Now, personally, I won't forget how Jess created a group when a bunch of us deactivated our accounts because we were bullied by some members of the fanbase. She motivated us to get back on here
I also can't forget how a tweet kind of bummed me out and Jess made it a point to put this particular person in her place. That's how she was. Protective of the people she knew. When I was disappointed regarding attacks on MJ, she was the reassuring voice.
In June of this year, Jess had had some trouble breathing at home and reached out to a bunch of us. She said she was fine afterwards. I have no knowledge of the cause of her death but I could have never imagined that she would pass away just 4 months later...
She left one of our groups a month ago. The last message I have of her is in August of this year. If I regret anything, it's not checking up on her as often as she checked up on me 😥. We disagreed on several things, mainly politically, but I always looked up to her.
Jess, wherever you are right now, I hope you rest in peace 🙏🏾. I know the past year wasn't the easiest for you but I can't fathom someone like you leaving this world so soon. I sincerely hope you are in a better place. You have impacted this community more than most people...
here know. I know this tribute didn't encompass everything you were but I hope that members of the #MJFam have a better understanding of you now. 🙏🏾
*Slight correction, she would have turned 36 in November
I opened my closet this morning to see the Square One Crew T Shirt she made a point to send me. Again, a reminder of how kind you were 😔
