Responding to today’s @CommonsSTC report APPG Chair @LaylaMoran said: "Although it is right that the committee have found their voice and their findings echo many of those made by the APPG over the past year, this report is notable by its silence on a number of key areas” (1/3)
“including the catastrophic mismanagement of schools, the continued under delivery on donations to COVAX and no mention of Long Covid in 151 pages.” (2/3
“This report is no substitute for the full public inquiry this government has promised and the government must now commit to releasing interim findings from this inquiry before the next general election.” (3/3)

🧵 In yesterday’s session on the UK Government’s ‘winter plan’ MPs and Peers heard how the UK is more vulnerable to a Covid winter surge than its European neighbours.
He added that Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal have much lower levels of Covid-19 than Britain and can therefore “afford to see something of a surge in transmission” without “unduly stressing” their health systems.
In a new report published today we have called on the government to urgently set out a timetable for the Covid-19 public inquiry, we believe it is essential that the inquiry publishes its interim findings prior to the next UK general election. telegraph.co.uk/global-health/…
In the report we recommend that the government also sets up a new statutory body to oversee the implementation of the inquiry’s recommendations and test future pandemic preparedness.
Moreover, rather than releasing the results at the end of the process, it should be transparent throughout with findings on different elements published as the inquiry progresses, and acted upon where necessary, without delay.
1️⃣ The government should discourage all international leisure travel to prevent the importation of new variants & to reduce the risk of a third wave and further lockdowns. The government must also provide adequate financial support to businesses operating in the travel industry.
2️⃣ In the interim and going forward where essential international travel is
necessary, the UK government should improve Covid security in arrival halls at all UK entry points, including airports, ports and international train
stations. ✈️ 🚆
🗣@CarolineLucas vice-chairwoman of the APPG on coronavirus, said community engagement has shown it is possible to “overcome deep-seated mistrust” but it must be done at the grassroots level rather than “imposed by Whitehall”.
This pandemic has already exposed deep inequalities in our society.
We cannot allow schemes like vaccine passports to make this worse and alienate communities where vaccine take-up is already low dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9…
The APPG recommends that the UK government adopts the Covid-Secure UK plan as the long-term exit strategy to protect both the health and the wealth of the UK until widespread immunity through vaccination is achieved.
Control. Suppress. Eliminate.
2️⃣FIND, TEST, TRACE, ISOLATE & SUPPORT.
The APPG recommends that the UK government empowers local authorities to deliver a Find, Test, Trace, Isolate and Support system, backed up with proper financial support and assistance for those isolating.
