BREAKING: We’re suing South Carolina over their redistricting process, which largely avoided public input and has left electoral districts wildly out of proportion just months before election season.

Voters deserve fair maps — and a fair process to get them there.
The SC state legislature abruptly adjourned without passing new maps, which are drawn from the redistricting process following the census.

The legislature held very few, largely inaccessible public meetings on redistricting, most of which were in-person and during working hours.
The legislature has suggested instead it will pass new maps when it returns sometime in December or January.

This means there won’t be enough time for a court to evaluate the maps before the deadline for the 2022 primary elections.
If the legislature has its way, outdated maps that are not representative of voters in South Carolina will remain in place. This violates the bedrock principle of one person, one vote.

We and @ACLU_SC won’t stop fighting until South Carolina has fair maps.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an effort to tell the truth about our country’s history.

Since the ‘90s, universities, localities, and states have formally replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s or Native Americans’ Day.
The fight to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day began much earlier — led by Native American and Indigenous people advocating for our voices to be heard — and the movement has grown larger every year.
It’s also a day to celebrate Native cultures and recognize the fights for justice and autonomy that Native Americans still face.

BREAKING: A federal court has once again failed Texans by letting the state’s extreme 6-week abortion ban, SB8, go back into effect just as providers were ramping up the provision of care.

When SB8 was in effect, the impact was horrifying. This time will be no different.
This order is deeply alarming — and for millions of people in Texas, it is creating confusion and inconsistency in abortion access.

Allowing this cruel ban to continue will wreak havoc across the state, impacting marginalized communities the most.
Countless people will continue to be forced to flee Texas and seek the time-sensitive medical care they need elsewhere, inundating clinics in neighboring states and increasing wait times for abortion care across the region.

BREAKING: The US House just passed the EQUAL Act with strong bipartisan support, which will eliminate the sentencing disparity between powder and crack cocaine.

Now, the Senate must quickly follow suit and finally end this racially unjust policy.
For 35 years, this disparity has resulted in higher sentences for Black people, disproportionately tearing apart our families and communities.

6.3% of people sentenced under these laws are white — 77.1% are Black.
The law will also apply to past cases so that thousands of people who are still serving sentences under the unjust disparity will have the opportunity to petition courts for a reduced sentence.

ICYMI: @SenatorDurbin and @SenatorLeahy are urging President Biden to end lethal strikes outside of war zones.

We 100% agree.
For nearly 20 years, the US has carried out secretive, unaccountable killings outside recognized battlefields, exacting an appalling toll on Muslim, Brown, and Black communities around the world.
In June, the ACLU and 110+ groups wrote to President Biden demanding he disavow and end this program. aclu.org/letter/110-gro…

BREAKING: We are again asking the Supreme Court to intervene to stop SB8, a dangerous ban on abortion after six week of pregnancy in Texas.

In the 23 days since SB8 was implemented, it has eliminated the vast majority of abortion access in the state.
For half a century, SCOTUS has upheld the fundamental right to abortion.

But for the past 23 days, five justices have shrugged their shoulders as Texas politicians do an end-run around the Constitution, imposing serious harm on countless people, especially people of color.
Already, politicians in other states are proposing copycat bills that insult the Constitution, turn neighbor against neighbor, and force people to carry a pregnancy against their will.

It is past time for the Supreme Court to step in and right this grave injustice.

BREAKING: We’re suing the state of Ohio over the state's newly drawn maps for state House and Senate districts, which are an extreme partisan gerrymander.
The Ohio Redistricting Commission — which is dominated by Republicans — approved the maps last week by a 5-2 party line vote, in a blatant abuse of power.
Partisan gerrymandering, like what’s happening in Ohio, violates the core principle of a representative democracy — that voters should choose our elected officials, not the other way around.
