Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: On Oct, 8. we ID’d 1,085 new cases, Oct. 9 we ID’d 1,039 new cases & 628 new cases on Oct. 10. Over the past 24 hrs we ID’d 606 new cases & completed about 7.3K tests - our positivity rate was about 8.3%. (1/11)
There are active alerts/outbreaks in 464 schools - 13 on outbreak. Over the last few days, we’ve seen an encouraging decline in active cases & a falling positivity rate. These are early signs the growing # of vaccinated ABs & public health measures are having an impact. (2/11)
But we are not yet through this 4th wave & the effect it has on our health-care system. There are 1,053 people being treated for COVID-19 in hospital incl 242 in ICU. While it’s good news these numbers appear to have plateaued, they are still extremely high. (3/11)
We have 148 more COVID patients in hospital than the peak of the 2nd wave and 59% more in ICU than the worst point of the 3rd wave. We’re seeing some declines but the virus is still spreading. Elective surgeries and procedures are still being cancelled or postponed. (4/11)
And, sadly, people continue to die due to COVID-19. Since Friday, an average of 8 new deaths/day were reported to Alberta Health. I extend my condolences to the loved ones of all these individuals. (5/11)
Today’s reported deaths include a 14yr old w/pre-existing medical conditions. I’d like to be clear that this tragic outcome is incredibly rare for children. Unfortunately it can occur, particularly when an individual is experiencing other complex health considerations. (6/11)
As a doctor & a mother, I know the death of someone so young will be profoundly felt across the province. Again, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to this young person’s family and loved ones. Please know you’re in the thoughts of many of us today. (7/11)
We need to do everything we can to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our province. That includes following the public health measures, regardless of our vaccination status or where we live. It also includes getting fully vaccinated & encouraging others to do the same. (8/11)
If you have a friend/family member that is an AB age 75+, a First Nations, Métis or Inuit individual age 65+, a resident of a seniors’ congregate care facility, or age 12+ with an eligible immunocompromising condition, encourage them to book their third dose today. (9/11)
If they need assistance making or getting to the appointment, please help them out. If you know someone who is hesitant to the get the shot, share your own experience and reasons for being vaccinated and encourage them to speak to a health-care professional. (10/11)
These actions may seem small, but together, they are the difference between cases rising & falling, the difference between having to cancel elective surgeries & getting people procedures they need, & the difference between saving lives & losing more ABs to COVID-19. (11/11)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: In the last 24hrs, we ID’d 663 new cases & completed about 8K tests. Our + rate is about 8.8%. This is good news, but we must continue to watch closely as a single day’s numbers is less important than overall trends. (1/11)
Currently, 1,094 ppl are being treated for COVID-19 in hospital, incl 252 in ICU. Sadly, 26 more deaths were also reported. My condolences go to their loved ones, and to all who have lost a family member or friend during this difficult time. (2/11)
Cases have been rising for the past several wks. While this has impacted all ages, we have seen the highest rates recently in school-aged ABs. Those between 5 - 19 yrs. old currently make up about a 1/4 of active cases. (3/11)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We have added to the daily symptom screening checklist the recommendation that unvaccinated & partially vaccinated individuals quarantine for 14 days if they have been exposed to a + COVID case in their household. (1/10)
Living in the same home as someone w/ COVID puts you at the highest risk of infection & spreading the virus to others. This is not for other close contacts, such as classmates in school or a workplace. There are other health measures already in place for these settings. (2/10)
In the last 24hrs, we ID’d 1,660 new cases & completed about 18K tests. Our + rate is about 9.4%. 1,058 ppl are in hospital, incl 226 in ICU. 100% of new ICU admissions were unvaccinated. Sadly, 17 new deaths were also reported. My condolences go to anyone mourning a loss. (3/10)
Here is a summary of the latest #COVID19AB numbers: There are now 1,040 people in hospital due to COVID-19. Of the 810 non-ICU, 74.8% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 230 in ICU, 91.8% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. (1/4)
Over the past 24 hours, we identified 1,336 new cases & completed about 14.5K tests. Complete, up-to-date data, including breakdowns by region, can be found here. alberta.ca/covid-19-alber… (2/4)
Sadly, 20 new COVID-19 related deaths were reported to AB Health in the last 24hrs, ranging in age from <20 to >90. This is a sad reminder, that regardless of age, unvaccinated ABs are at higher risk of severe outcomes. I extend my condolences to everyone grieving today. (3/4)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: First a clarification: Physical activity is critical for the overall health & well-being of youth, & necessary to daily living, so youth sports & recreation activities are not part of the Restrictions Exemption Program. (1/10)
Some facilities are requiring proof of vaccine for ABs <18. Operators can set rules that exceed min CMOH order requirements & I clearly support vaccine protection, but encourage facility operators to let youth <18 use your facilities w/other COVID precautions in place. (2/10)
Masking is mandatory in all indoor public spaces across AB, even in businesses that have implemented the Restrictions Exemption Program. Get vaccinated & continue to follow the health measures so we can drive cases down & stop the current spike in hospitalizations. (3/10)
Physical activity is critically important for the overall health & well-being of youth & is necessary to daily living. That is why AB government decided against requiring proof of vaccination for youth U-18 who are taking part in sport, rec & performance activities. (1/4)
Some arenas & facilities serving both adult & youth populations, have decided to take a 1-size-fits-all approach to requiring proof of vaccination, eliminating options for unvaccinated youth U-18 to take part in sport, recreation/performance activities. (2/4)
While nothing prohibits these organizations from doing so. I encourage organizations to allow all youth U-18 to participate in sport, recreation and performance activities & focus on other ways to reduce COVID-19 risk in these settings. (3/4)
Here is a summary of the latest #COVID19AB numbers: Today, there are 954 people in hospital due to COVID-19. Of the 738 non-ICU, 79.1% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 216 in ICU, 91.2% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. (1/6)
Over the past 24 hours, we ID’d 1,436 new cases & completed about 13.4K tests. On Sept 18, we ID’d 1,592 new cases from about 16.5K tests. On Sept 17, 1,605 new cases were ID’d from about 16.4K tests. (2/6)
