I believe women from Northern Ireland should be entitled to the same reproductive rights as women across the rest of the UK and am profoundly disappointed by the court’s verdict today. (1/5)
The UK Government are the only ones to have taken tangible steps to make abortion services available in NI. I introduced regulations in March of 2020, setting the legal framework for abortion services in NI. (2/5)
In March 2021, when no progress had been made by the Executive, I made further regulations taking the power to direct Ministers. Women in NI must have access to safe and local abortion services as part of their right to healthcare. (3/5)
That is why in July I issued a direction to @healthdpt, @RobinSwannMoH & @HSCBoard to commission and make abortion services available by March 2022. I will continue to drive progress until this is achieved. (4/5)
I am hugely disappointed that the Executive and Department of Health are continuing to seem to wilfully neglect the welfare and rights of women and girls in NI. (5/5)
