TCBN has learned so much from Indigenous communities and global leaders in modeling local Community Benefits. Thank you to our partners on this series including @CityBuildingRU@AtkinsonCF University of Toronto @yorkuniversity@CANURB
The LA experience has focused on organizing a broad range of Community organizations along with the Building Trades and the City to Build Power, winning significant local targets from 10-40% ensuring local jobs opportunities, apprenticeships.
There's been great success Building Power and ensuring high quality jobs including one example where Black apprentices and Journeypersons were as low as 2-4% of the unionized workforce up to 10-20% @roxtynan from @LAANE
Land subsidies, tax breaks, free land, are offered to develop land at the exclusion of the local community. In US and in Toronto too, with local racialized communities and colonized people, Community Benefits offer tools to build equity. @LaurenLJacobs of @powerswitchact
Public lands offered for development should be publicly purposed. There are cities and counties can use a racial equity matrix to centre local communities in decisions made about how public lands are used. #inclusiverecovery
Growing a skilled and diverse workforce is the mandate of @bcibinc, a Crown company says Irene Kerr, President & CEO of BC Infrastructure Benefits. They have moved away from targets and toward "priority" hiring to great success. Its improving equity and health & safety on sites
BC has seen success creating access and are moving to a focus on retention. Training workers Indigenous history of the land & anti-racist practices. Investment in Community Benefits is an investment in people, it's an investment in human legacy of public infrastructure projects
Targets are critical if you want to succeed with the majority of Contractors. Without enforcement there is nothing that happens when aspirational targets are not met. @roxtynan
When public land is developed our officials must act on the common good. Community benefits like any campaign need to organize community around decisions being made on their behalf. The community must be engaged throughout the process @LaurenLJacobs#inclusiverecovery
The #Union is our partner, a CBA is more than a collective agreement. You need all the stakeholders at the table. Irene Kerr credits the immediate success of their agreements on "priority" hiring. #inclusiverecovery
How do we bridge the challenges from underrepresented groups who would never see themselves in ICI construction? @ros_powell
Create access points. Training. Learning in community. Door knocking.
Last thoughts on what makes it all work? Accountability, relationships. Empowering communities, organising. The common good belongs to us, we need to return to the common good. #inclusiverecovery

TCBN is so grateful to have all of the disparate groups in this space coming together for this conversation. Let's ground equity diversity and inclusion. We want legally binding agreement that will be accepted by the community.
The community needs a legally binding agreement committing to this land for the community. Community member Symone Walters see the vision of this space as critical to the future of #janefinch
