Gender dysphoria is the only mental condition that doctors are forced to "affirm," meaning that the patient has complete control over their diagnosis. Really think about the implications of that given the current phenomenon of social contagion & how dysphoria is commonly treated.
The word "inclusive" in this tweet basically means, "we accept that some people have made 'identities' out of their mental conditions and we will therefore abandon our role as competent medical professionals in this area."
Imagine mental health care “inclusive” of people who identify as Elvis Presley. They'll treat some of their mental health issues, but refuse to treat or even question their belief that they're Elvis. They will be fully accepted as Elvis. They’ll even address them as “The King.”
Found a paper wasp nest with nearly 100% of its cells parasitized by moths. These are the cocoons.
These moths lay their eggs on the developing wasp larvae at night, which hatch once the larvae cap their cells. They're then eaten alive and the wasps can't do anything about it.
During my paper wasp research in PA, my nests sometimes got up to ~20% parasitized by moths. My wasps were a native species, which has coevolved with these moths. The nest above is that of an invasive paper wasp, Polistes dominula, which may not have evolved adequate defenses.
1/ I've changed my mind somewhat about this tweet. I don't think we should teach kids about subjects like Creationism in public school. It's a crowded curriculum, and we should just teach kids the science. Likewise, I see no point in creating time to learn about CRT.
2/ Parents are free to supplement their children's education with CRT, just like Creationists can teach their kids about Noah's Ark at home if they wish. And there are countless Creation myths out there apart from the Christian stories, so why favor Christianity over the others?
3/ Similarly, we don't need to teach every alternative to racial equality. There are many racist systems of belief, and CRT is only one of them. Given the number of valuable subjects that should take priority in public school curricula, I support removing CRT from it entirely.
Seeing many articles saying how these athletes were banned from competing as female due to their "naturally high testosterone levels."
Yes, it's "naturally" high because they're XY and have testes. But they conveniently leave out that bit of information.lgbtqnation.com/2021/07/two-ci…
The rules regarding testosterone levels in the Olympics for the "women's" category only applies to XY (male) intersex athletes. Frankly, these athletes shouldn't be allowed to compete as females at any testosterone level.
1/ This new @sciam editorial promotes scientific falsehoods while purporting to dispel them.
Puberty blockers aren't "reversible" in the context of trans medicine. We don't know much about what happens developmentally when *normal* puberty is delayed. scientificamerican.com/article/why-an…
2/ The "reversible" claim refers to the fact that *very* young children who begin puberty much to early, and risk developmental issues, can take PBs to delay puberty until the normal age for puberty (~12 years old). In this context, the effects of PBs are mostly safe.
3/ But we don't have good data on the effects of PBs when puberty is delayed during the time when children would *normally* undergo puberty. And the data we do have is raises many red flags.
PBs are used off-label in trans medicine. They are not approved for this context.
