@maggieNYT (1) Democratic communications directors probably do a lot wrong with messaging, but they do not have access to the general population, they have access to hardcore supporters & the mainstream media. The mainstream media selects what they want to amplify to the general population.
(2) Mainstream media *chooses* to focus on the horse-race of getting the bills passed (and palace intrigue around that horse-race), rather than what is in the bills. Same choice for election coverage. Two key reasons for this (2a) they think the horse-races sells better ...
(2b) Mainstream media likes the horse-race, because it is easy to falsely equate the validity of the people policies & people of two parties, if (and only if) you ignore the policies! Impossible to actually showcase policy and not make the Republicans look bad!
(3) Top NYT op-ed now glorifying Sinema AND hard-news article excusing Manchin: they never mention fact all 50 Republicans in senate oppose bill, incredibly unity of other 48 Democrats (including Mark Kelly in same state as Sinema). They're completely botching horse-race coverage
Mainstream media wants you to believe that “news” is thing that exists & they just transcribe it but millions of things could be news any day. A few powerful reporters & editors of major mainstream publications like @maggieNYT @nytimes *select* what becomes news & how it’s framed
