I went to school in Rhodes' hometown - Bishops Stortford - and they and we were all - then - very proud of him. The son of a small market town who had conquered Africa. I remember a very forthright teacher angrily lamenting the fact Rhodesia was being renamed Zimbabwe.
So I can understand to some extent why people who invested personally in characters like Rhodes might once have struggled to accept the post Empire age and reexamine the likes of him. But why any intelligent person would continue to do that now in 2021 is genuinely beyond me.
I see the Rhodes Centre has finally been renamed the Southmill Arts Centre. Which is a big leap forward
