BREAKING: NTSB says the Metro train that derailed last week derailed at least three times that same day & was not pulled out of service until the last derailment. It was able to get back on the tracks the first two times. Broken brake parts left behind all 3 times. #wmata
NTSB says the first 2 derailments the train kind of righted itself & got back on the tracks. But the third one started at a switch near the Rosslyn station and the train never righted itself. It grew worse as the train moved on until the train could no longer move easily. #wmata
NTSB says that the first two derailments the Metro train operator appears to have honestly not known what happened. The brake parts were only found later when the investigation started. Each time it was the fourth car of eight that derailed. #wmata
The first two derailments the train was switching tracks so it encountered two switches. NTSB says the first switch derailed it, the second switch got it back on track. But at Rosslyn there was no second switch so it stayed off the tracks. #wmata
The NTSB says after the derailment Metro reported a problem with the wheel-axle assembly of 7000 series trains that has been growing much worse. Inspections uncovered 2 issues in 2017 but this year the number jumped to 18 with 31 other problems found since the derailment. #wmata
Both the NTSB and Metro overseer the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission say Metro had not previously notified them of this problem with the 7000 series trains. It's unclear at this point how long those trains will be pulled from service. #wmata
With the 7000 series out of service, Metro says it is only running older trains with 6 cars, like this one I just saw at L’Enfant Plaza. Each line will arrive every 30 minutes. #wmata
I'm told it's highly unlikely the 7000 series trains will be back in service within the next couple days. Based on folks I'm talking to it's really not clear how long beyond that they'll be out of service. #wmata
The timing of all this is especially devastating for Metro. Metrorail was finally starting to see significant ridership growth after being decimated by the pandemic, clearly this is going to send its momentum back in the negative direction. #wmata
Even the recent ridership growth had only gotten Metrorail back to a little less than a third of the number of riders it used to see. Adding service in early September had helped draw people, but now with the 7000s gone trains are a half hour apart. #wmata

A defect found in one axle of the Metrorail car that derailed last week was found in other 7000 series cars, so @MetrorailSafety is ordering all 7000 series cars pulled from service before Metro opens tomorrow morning. The 7000 series cars are Metro‘s newest. #wmata
If you ride Metro prepare for a really rough day tomorrow with the 7000 series trains gone. Metro says the 7000 series makes up about 60% of its fleet. #wmata
A Metro board of directors committee approved this today, another vote by the full board is still needed - but comments by the transit police chief made it seem as if MTPD would do very little enforcement at all if and when this goes into effect. (thread) #wmata
He says they wouldn't suspend the person's SmarTrip card & they'd only be charged with trespassing if they committed another crime on Metro property while under a ban. #wmata
Q: “I try to get on a train, what happens if I’m banned?”
MTPD Chief: "Theoretically sir you could get on the train & as long as you didn’t commit a criminal offense that drew your attention to the police then you could get on that train, and we would not be aware of it.” #wmata
On the scene near Giles St in Springfield’s Newington Forest area, where a husband & wife were shot & killed in their front yard this morning.
The new Fairfax County police chief called it a “tragic, brutal, vicious double murder.“
Fairfax Co. Police had been at the same home Monday for many hours after a report of a “dispute“ & burglary. They believe today’s murders were connected to what happened Monday.
Monday’s incident was still under investigation when this morning’s double murder happened.
Police chief: “This was not a random act of violence. Not at all...the shooter or shooters, we strongly believe, are known to a relative of our two victims.“
US attorney’s office announces huge operation in which authorities seized large amounts of drugs, illegally possessed guns, and cash.
The operation involved seven states and the alleged criminals had a large presence in Loudoun County.
The DEA says seven different groups were operating out of the DC region.
Although the drug operation spanned far beyond Loudoun, the county sheriff says in Loudoun alone it was the largest drug seizure in county history.
He says the drugs stemmed from the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico, once led by El Chapo.
NEW: Metro has identified problems with its response to a 3/26 disabled train near Rhode Island Avenue station that affected 109 riders: poor communication, an inadequate response that left some riders stranded 90 mins, a train car that rolled 137 ft after riders got off. #wmata
GM Paul Wiedefeld says he’s taking several immediate steps, including adding Safety Dept. and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) staff to the rail operations control center 24/7 to coordinate the response to emergencies. #wmata
Metro says no one at the scene reported that a train car had rolled about 137 feet at less than five mph while they were trying to get it ready to tow. It should have been reported. #wmata
Some of Metro's own board members think the number is too low, but #wmata isn't projecting many more rail riders even by the end of 2021:
Metrorail Number of Trips Oct - Dec
2019 45.5 million
2020 6.3 million
2021 (projected) 8.0 million
Some Metro board members indicated that is an extremely conservative estimate given how many people are expected to be vaccinated by then. #wmata
Metro's chief financial officer indicated many rail riders who can work from home may never come back five days a week: "Going forward, the expectation is that folks are going to be working perhaps one or two days in the office and the rest from home." #wmata
