COVID Update: There’s lots of evidence that the country has made up its mind about vaccine requirements.

Now time to get our leaders to follow. 1/
OK so… policy is a series of trade offs.

For example, environmental regulations vs. unfettered economic growth. That’s a trade off.

In the case of vaccine requirements to enter places where lots of people can get infected, there’s also a trade off. 2/
Benefits of requiring vaccinations at school, work, travel: Saving lives & ending the pandemic earlier

vs

Harm of requiring vaccinations: violating the incorrect perception of a few that this violates the constitution & is equivalent to martial law

As I say, trade offs 3/
Chicago Police Union Boss John Catanzara is very upset about the requirement that officers get vaccinated or tested. His concern?

“We’re in America, goddamn it. We don’t want to be forced to do anything. Period. This ain’t Nazi f***ing Germany.” 4/
Hard to focus on public safety in Chicago when Gestapo footsteps are raging through your fantasies. 5/
Because fighting infectious disease is on that slippery slope to government takeover…when everything is on the slippery slope to government takeover. 6/
I for one am comforted that we live in a country where people can express their opinions, peacefully protest, & have a public debate

But sometime the loud ill -informed voices are not representative of how people feel. Paying it too much attention isn’t how to make policy.7/
So what do real people think?

First of all, people vote with their shoulders.

At schools, colleges, sports teams, companies & the military, 95% of people get vaccinated when required. 8/
What about how people rate political leaders handling of the pandemic?

In states with w vaccine requirements, 52% favorable.

In states with no vaccine requirements, 42%

And in states that PREVENT vaccine requirements, approval is 36%. 9/
In states like Florida and Texas, where there are mandates against mandates, only a minority approve. 10/
Anti-vax requirement candidates like Larry Elder have been obliterated.

People don’t buy the argument that the great threat to them is the government as they watch people around them die & the pandemic prolonged by anti-vaxx rhetoric. 11/
Nobody’s first choice is a requirement. We all wish people were adult enough to take minor small steps for the good of the whole.

But unlike most of the world, where 90% of people gratefully get vaccinated, this isn’t true here. 12/
Requirements can be properly and respectfully done. These are not requirements to get vaccinated. They are requirements not to infect people.

They ask people to get tested or vaccinated, greatly reducing the odds of spread, if in public settings. 13/
If a society decides that simply protecting one another is too far than I’m afraid there is little that society can agree on. Little that binds them together.

When Q thinking begins to permeate & everyone is out to get you, no one is to be trusted & there is no logical end. 14/
But to John & Tucker & Marjorie, here’s your answer: you actually don’t represent America with your libertarian fantasies. Most Americans do not agree with you. 15/
You’ve made your argument. But you are losing.

You think you are winning by poisoning just enough people to keep zealots contributing & the pandemic brewing & more people dying & many communities vulnerable.

But these are signs you’ve not only lost, but lost the plot./end

COVID Update: The loss of Colin Powell to complications from COVID provides an overpowering lesson: get vaccinated. 3 million people with compromised immune systems depend on you. 1/
Most importantly, my condolences to Alma and General Powell’s family. Even the loss of such a public person is a deeply personal one.

We don’t just have 700,000 losses. We have a deeply personal death 700,000 times.

Less famously, this is still happening 2000 times a day. 2/
Amidst our overall reaction to this national loss is surprise from some that a fully vaccinated person could die from COVID.

Vaccinated people can die of COVID if their immune system isn’t strong enough to benefit fully from a vaccine. This is why we all need to protect them.3/

COVID Update: There’s always a way to do it right.

When we do the payoff is huge. 1/
Let’s start with Merck. Merck historically pays a lot of attention to global health equity.

As they roll out their highly effective anti-viral, molnupiravir ,they have already contracted with 5 generic manufacturers in India with records for effective global distribution. 2/
Poorer countries around the world and some foundations report that Merck has been coordinating to make distribution there as good or better than in wealthy nations.

Merck donates other drugs to poor nations that treat horrible illnesses where most other pharma companies don’t.3/

A thought about expertise.
Stroke of luck. The same people who are Twitter pandemic experts are also supply chain experts.
For a country that abhors experts, it’s amazing how many there seem to be.

COVID Update: When cases drop, we should rejoice. But in other circles, it’s when trouble begins. And as often happens, it’s beginning in Texas. 1/
Last time cases were dropping, Gov Ron DeSantis felt the time was right to get cocky. To tell the world that he wasn’t about to allow the state to fall victim to “Faucism.” Instead he was for freedom.

What did that mean?

2/
What did this mean?

-Boats can’t dock if they ask people if their vaccinated
-Schools can’t require masks
-Why vaccinate when you can treat sick people?

Ultimately it meant the plurality of people who died this year in the US died under his watch in Florida. 3/

COVID Update: COVID has been defined by its unpredictability. But what happens next is as predictable as it’s ever been.

Our job now is to beat away any potential surprises. 1/
1. Case & death rates should decline in much of the country & most hospitals should get a reprieve.

Danger areas will be in rural areas in the Upper Midwest & Great Plaines. 2/
The hard way or the easy way…

Big states like Texas and Florida have seen their surge & our thankfully recovering.

The Northeast & California have high levels of vaccinations. Those states should have low levels of COVID relative to last winter. 3/

COVID Update: 700,000 lives lost and a nation’s soul damaged to COVID. 1/
We are going through a period of extended trauma. We witnessed it all. Denial of science, a health system marked by neglect, massive disparities between rich & poor and black & white, cruelty & bullying, unmourned losses.

And then COVID happened. 2/
Our accumulated sins which have played out slowly and in shadows over many years got to be seen in high speed as the pandemic fished out suffering both cruel & levied at the many who had a harder time protecting themselves. 3/
