I’ve directed many scenes with guns. We have safety meetings every time a gun is on set. The entire crew present has the chance to examine the gun. If blanks are used, they’re supposed to be checked too. I could go into further detail but suffice to say, this should NEVER happen!

I would be surprised if this doesn’t end with manslaughter charges for one if not two people. The person responsible for the faulty blanks (if that’s what was fired) and the person who shot the victims. Alec as an actor has safety protocols that if adhered, should prevent this.
I can’t stress enough how seriously guns are taken on set. It takes a very lazy set, breaking protocols with seriously weak leadership for a shooting to take place. It’s not normal. Decades ago it was relaxed. Today it comes with close to the most serious safety protocols on set.
Note: A dummy round can get a bullet into the barrel and then a blank can power a dummy round stuck in the barrel to fire. It’s happened before killing an actor. It’s part of why we have so many safety checks. If this happened, theoretically it could split into two projectiles.
That’s an almost best case scenario for negligence though. If these end up being full live ammo, there’s absolutely no excuse for it to happen at all if you’re following proper safety protocols. What a tragedy. Pray for the victim’s family!
