On Jan. 6, supporters of former President Trump stormed the Capitol hoping to stop the transfer of power to President Biden. How did this happen? How do we prevent it from happening again? Here’s how we’re investigating. #FOIAFriday
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
We have filed dozens of FOIAs related to the attacks. Yesterday, we sued for records that could shed light on what was going on behind the scenes when requests for the deployment of National Guard troops to help secure the Capitol were delayed for hours.
americanoversight.org/document/compl…
The lawsuit was filed against the Departments of Justice, Defense, Homeland Security, and the Interior for failing to release records responsive to 11 FOIA requests we filed in August. Here’s some of what the requests ask for:
Last Friday, we filed two more lawsuits to compel the release of documents after federal agencies failed to respond in the time required by law.
We sued the FBI to find out what, if any, security measures were planned for Jan. 6.

In January, we FOIA’d communications and directives sent or received by FBI officials ahead of and during the insurrection.
Then, in August, we FOIA’d the FBI seeking records from any meetings held on January 5, 2021.

In both instances, the FBI acknowledged it received the FOIAs, but has not given us records. Now, we’re suing to compel the documents’ release.
americanoversight.org/document/compl…
Next, we’re suing the Secret Service for records related to a Jan. 5 meeting regarding security measures for Jan. 6. We also want to know if Trump gave Rudy Giuliani or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton “protectee” status at a Jan. 6 rally.
americanoversight.org/document/ameri…
In August, we sent the Secret Service a FOIA request for records related to a Jan. 5 meeting in which multiple agencies discussed the rallies planned for Jan. 6.
We also FOIA'd records that could shed light on any Secret Service security provided to Giuliani and Paxton at the Jan. 6 march and “Stop the Steal” rally.

Finally, we FOIA’d communications related to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
The Secret Service has not produced these records to us in the time required by law, so we are suing to compel the release of the documents.

These lawsuits have the potential to shed light on the attacks on our democracy and how government agencies responded.
In August, we sued the Defense Department for failing to release requested documents that could shed light on the Jan. 6 attack, including top officials’ memos, calendars, and communications from the final weeks of the Trump administration.
We also have ongoing litigation seeking:
-defense officials’ communications with Trump, Mike Pence, & White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows
-DOD & DOJ call logs from Jan. 6
-DOD, DOJ, & Secret Service communications & directives from Jan. 6
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
As judges and juries begin to sentence rioters for their actions that deadly day, there’s still so much we don’t know about the attacks. Public records requests are a key tool in exposing what happened.

NEW: We obtained text messages sent by Fulton County, Penn. commissioners that indicate the county’s Dec. 31 initial evaluation of voting machines conducted by Wake TSI may have been prompted by a subpoena threat by Sen. Doug Mastriano.
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
The records suggest Mastriano, who has sought to undermine public confidence in the 2020 election, told the county that it could cooperate with the evaluation of voting machines voluntarily or face a subpoena.
In a text exchange, the county’s election director Patti Hess said that Mastriano indicated “all counties are to do this or be subpoena[ed] to prove votes.”

NEW: We’re suing DOJ, DOD, DHS, and DOI for records that could shed light on what was going on behind the scenes when requests for the deployment of National Guard troops to help secure the Capitol were delayed for hours.
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
A major remaining open question from the Jan. 6 attacks revolves around how the Trump White House responded to the attack and what accounted for the delay in authorizing the deployment of National Guard troops to assist at the Capitol.
There was a more than three-hour delay in the deployment of National Guard troops after Capitol Police first called for backup at 1:49 p.m.

The Wisconsin Assembly’s partisan election review has been in the spotlight as the attorney hired to lead the “investigation” has made numerous public missteps. Here’s what has happened in the “review’s” rough couple of weeks — and how we’re investigating.
americanoversight.org/news-roundup-s…
In case you need a quick recap: In May, Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced a
new review of Wisconsin’s 202 general election. The review is being run by attorney and former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman.
Earlier this month, Gableman drew well-deserved criticism for comparing the @journalsentinel to Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler's Nazi propaganda minister.

NEW LAWSUIT: We’re suing Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos for failing to release records related to the Assembly’s baseless efforts to investigate the 2020 general election.
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
Speaker Vos has done everything in his power to protect this investigation from scrutiny. Finger-pointing, name-calling, and cavorting with conspiracy theorists are all perfectly legal — but ignoring the open records statute is not.
americanoversight.org/document/compl…
Vos has engaged in a months-long pattern of delay, failure to engage with our inquiries, and narrow disclosure of irrelevant documents to avoid compliance with the law.

It’s time for Speaker Vos to follow the law and make these documents available to the public.

Election officials across the country have been receiving threats since the 2020 presidential election. Some officials have faced regular emails and phone calls harassing and threatening them with violence.
reuters.com/investigates/s…
In June, the FBI launched a task force to address the issue. We FOIA’d DOJ for records related to this task force that could shed light on these threats.
americanoversight.org/document/foia-…
Specifically, we requested records “sufficient to identify the number and types of threats to election officials currently being investigated by or previously investigated by the FBI.”

This #FOIAFriday, we’re talking about taxpayer spending at properties owned by former president Donald Trump. Here’s some highlights of what we’ve uncovered using FOIA and state open records laws so far.
Last December, @MartynMcL of the @TheScotsman reported on records we obtained regarding 4 trips made by Eric Trump. Turnberry — a Trump resort in Scotland — charged U.S. taxpayers $32,742 for the accompanying Secret Service members’ hotel costs.
We uncovered that billionaire and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. Woody Johnson paid £1,143 (about $1,500) for a single day of activities at Trump’s golf course in Scotland in July 2018.
